thanks Spiros @fiveten, hopefully my dreadfully long build is somewhat entertaining. Now on to tonight's progress. Using the scanned decals/instructions for this kit, I created some masks for the hinomaru. I decided to use a 1.10m red disc with a 75mm white ring based on interpolation from some photos by a friend. in 1/48 scale these measure 23mm and 1.5mm, respectively.

I also tried something different this time, adding some extra mask to key the insignia in the correct location. Now, aligning hinomaru isn't really that hard, but the keyed masks made it very simple to line up top/bottom and left/right markings. With the masks placed, I sprayed some off white for the ring and to aid in coverage on top of the dark green paint. Then I placed the ring mask and sprayed red (Mr Color C385). I had issues with paint coverage with the thinned paint, but after 5 thin coats I was satisfied with the result.

The Raiden I am building is one of the few that I have seen to have the white ring overpainted. In fact I think there were only two groups that did this, and it's one of the reasons I chose this scheme. Next I placed the central red disc mask and removed the white ring mask and applied D1 Deep Green Black (AK RC304) which was thinned 75% with MRT (to speed up drying time to reduce the chances of seepage...there were none).

Finally I removed all the masks and to my dismay there were portions where there was red and white showing, clearly the successive masks didn't entirely line up with each other. Some quick touchups and the markings were done. Up to this point the Raiden was somewhat drab, but with the red hinomaru against the dark green, the plane really pops. There are some parts where the mask pulled up the paint, but that was due to the hairspray between the white and D1 paint as I was intending to chip the field applied D1. I will chip it tomorrow, making sure to do it near the pulled up paint.

Yep, the absolutely wonderful and improvising " @wkubacki " painting technique is evident, my good friend!
This is becoming an absolute gem of a Raiden!

@fiveten I can only imagine what I can do in 1/32 scale. After this plane I will be starting 2 builds, one Army 1/48 plane and the other the 1/32 Ki-84 prototype, which will be more of a long term build with the deadline being a model show next September.

Both seem amazing builds, my friend @wkubacki!
    Looking forward to them!
I will soon start Saburo Sakai's Hasegawa 1/48 Zero.

Looks great, Woody (@wkubacki). I have been experimenting with my wife's die cut machine and have found it to be very useful. It looks like you have have gotten the machine figured out. I have been cutting some masks for 1/32 planes, but haven't really tried anything smaller.

@gblair It's quite the versatile machine, I keep finding new uses for it. It handles 1/48 quite easily, except for the smaller stencils. For my upcoming 1/32 Ki-84 build I'm going to attempt to create as many masks as possible, as well as creating a rivet guide for the entire plane.

As mentioned in my previous post, I wanted to chip the green paint off of the white hinomaru masks. I had to do this carefully so as to make it look real and at the same time trying to blend in the portion of green paint that lifted off with the masks.

Next I created masks for the tail code and arrow for the steps. I have only seen the arrow on one plane, so I wonder if it was a standard item that just wasn't captured on film due to the darkness and reflectiveness of the D2 paint. Then I painted the tail code with highly thinned off white paint (thinned with a rapid thinner to speed up drying). you will notice that the port side "63" is higher than the rest of the numbers, this was done on purpose to mimic the original aircraft.

With the tail code, you now know which plane I am basing my build on. It is a 332 Kokutai plane and I only have 1 picture of it, and the picture is one of the main reasons I chose to depict this aircraft. In addition to not having seen a 332 Ku J2M3 modelled, and the fact that it has the rare (for the Raiden) overpainted white hinomaru rings, the picture reminds me of the comradery and bond that these two pilots had. Did they survive the war? Did they ever meet each other again? Well, enough of that, enjoy the pictures

Looking great, my friend @wkubacki! Those masks really seem to do the job.
Loved the pic with both pilots.

Quick Thanksgiving update. I traded a kit for model workstation designed and 3D printed by a local club member. I don’t know how I got by without one.

Masked the no walk lines tonight, and that’s about all I felt doing.

Wow, painting those thin lines is an accomplishment by itself, my friend @wkubacki.
    Nice workstation!

And some post turkey dinner modelling; I realized I never riveted the landing gear doors fairly simple operation, then sanded them flush. And then I went back into my turkey induced coma

@fiveten Thanks Spiros... they looked bare and I couldn't just leave them like that, especially when the rivets will catch the dirt and grime of weathering. I've been looking at this phot for some LG inspiration..I know, I'm weird.

No weird whatsoever! A true, dedicated modeler is a better description, my friend @wkubacki!
