Thank you @fiveten, @johnb and @lgardner. Louis, please do post your picture whenever you find it! Here we go with the next update:

    IJN Grey!

A layer of IJN Grey and salt off

Not quite sure what I was thinking, but the salt were somewhat generously spread on this one.

It will receive a coat of very worn green of course, but I still have a feeling of the weathering being a bit generous here. Oh, well, it is all about learning for me as these are my first attempts at salt-weathering here and on the rufe.

next up it will need some grey rudders and stuff, then more salt and finally green – I’m rather excited. . . .

    Looks great indeed, Erik @airbum
I think the weathering will be toned down a bit and look great with the worn green applied.

I think it will look super, my friend @airbum!
A bit more weathering in modeling is usually not unfavorable.

thank you @j-healy, @johnb and @fiveten. I have salted, airbrushed and washed – here we go:

    Salt’n paint

Over the last few days, salt, paint and water have been used on the build!

First up, a generous amount of salt

a very generous amout I thought!

Then it was time for paint

now, that is a rough surface.

Time to wash and rub off

First I rubbed it dry with my finger, but that left some not-so-nice scratches. Then water was used to soak the surface, and then gently rubbing it of with a cotton bud. That worked well, and finally drying with tissue.

next up probably decals? – tune in and check

Your modifications have really made a difference with this build, Erik (@airbum). Thinning the cowl flaps seems like an easy improvement that really makes a big difference visually. Interesting use of the salt technique. Looking forward to seeing how it all comes out.

Thank you @fiveten, @gblair and @johnb. Sadly no decals yet, but a lot of work to prepare for more paint.

    No decals yet!

    but masking took place

I had to get the moving parts painted, as they are another color than the rest

    what a load of work!

I also managed to create a very thin mix with extremely many bubles in it – resulting in a myriad of small holes in the paint!

I let it dry a bit and then I went back and re-painted.

actually a bit of luck with the need to repaint – I decided the first grey was wrong, so loaded another shade for the re-paint. I shall remove the tape later tonight and check if it looks right

What an amount of masking, my friend @airbum! it's the only way for a spotless result, though. Looking forward to the "correct" gray!

Indeed a lot of tape, Erik @airbum. Looking forward to the result once the tape is off as well.

That's the way I do it, Erik (@airbum). If there is one tiny spot not masked my airbrush will find it with the wrong color paint.

    Erik, @airbum

It sounds as if we all share a common trait with painting... almost as if it was meant to be. Color changes or minor imperfections seem to be my "normal" style, especially lately. Now I believe it will look even better the next time around for you. Waiting for the wrapping to come off is a lot like Christmas time.

    Keep it going 🙂

@fiveten, @johnb, @gblair and @lgardner, what can I say – the masks came off, and the nicest little grey triangle appeared at the wingtip where no mask had set foot!

    Masks off

With the paint dry overnight, it is time to unwrap the Zero

I have to admit the huge pile of tape is from the Zero AND the Rufe

checking the difference on the belly with its mostly IJN grey against the aileron-grey.

Just for fun, the cowling was dryfitted for a few pictures

starting to look like an A6M, more or less.

I’ll have to think if I do like the moving parts being so nice, but they might have received some TLC after the monsoon?

Very interesting paint scheme, Erik (@airbum). You are right about the control surfaces looking so pristine, they might look out-of-place with the rest of the plane weathered. It is possible they were damaged and either replaced or repainted. Decals will make a big difference. Looking forward to the rest.
