    Not Gavia @eb801 .

    Roden He51 - binned
Italeri CR-42 - still trying to figure it out
Arma Hobby - F2F1 great kit

Not a great outcome for my biplane builds!

    Welcome aboard !
This looks like a great one to build. I have a similar kit of the same kind of plane. Mine is a 1/32 Roden Albatros D-I. I have plans to eventually build it for this group.

I never realized it, but they only made around 150 of these planes before they switched over to the newer D-II version.
I have found out the main differences between the D-I and the D-II were the wing cabane struts. The earlier D-I had the upper wing placed higher and it blocked the pilot's upper view. They changed this by rearranging the cabane struts and lowering the upper wing to where it was more in line with the pilot's eyesight. It was still above the pilot, but not nearly as much.
Like Tom C mentioned, the radiators also interfered some with the forward and down view for the pilot.

I think the upper wing was dropped by something like 8 or 9 inches in height on the D-2, because they changed the design of the cabanes and shortened the outer struts to compensate. The inner cabane struts were a totally different design between the D-I and the D-II. The D-II looked more like the later D-III and D-V style.

Then on the later D-II's they removed the "elephant ear" radiators and went with one placed in the center of the upper wing. So some of the later D-II's will look somewhat like the later D-III.

These Albatros planes are gorgeous. Thanks for starting this one, and welcome aboard.

Thanks for the above valuable information as always, Louis @lgardner

    Back in The Game!

I'm a left handed modeler and I shattered my wrist at the end of August. It's not totally healed yet but at least I can model once again. I resumed working on the Albatros. Here's my progress report:

I replicated the fuselage wood interior by priming the cockpit pieces first with Tamiya Desert Yellow. Then I drew various grain lines with a brown watercolor pencil and a graphite pencil. I brushed over it with clear orange followed by a blend of clear flat and semi-gloss to seal it and soften up the watercolor. Later I applied some Tamiya panel line brown wash. The wood grain may look a bit out of scale but nothing inside the cockpit will be visible whatsoever other than the BarracudaCast seat once the fuselage halves are joined together.

I partially assembled the engine which has to be done before gluing the two fuselage halves together and prior to painting. I didn't want to break anything off so I will add the rest of the parts as the model nears completion. The wood grain may look out of scale but nothing inside the cockpit will be visible whatsoever aside from the seat.

I've now moved on to assembling the machine guns using the kit's PE extras. But the holidays are suddenly here, so no guessing when I will get back to working on this.

Feels good to be building something again.

Glad you are back, Eric (@eb801). I can imagine how frustrating it was to be unable to do so many things for so long. Interior looks really good. I especially like the wood grain.

    Welcome back, Eric @eb801
Good to hear that your wrist gets better and you are able to model again.
Your progress clearly shows that your skills have not suffered.
    All looking perfectly fine.

@eb801 - Gavia kits are just earlier Eduard kits. It's not at the level of sophistication of the Eduard Albatros D.V, but there's nothing difficult about it.

TC@tcinla: I can see it’s not difficult so far. Have you built this kit? Do the wing struts need thinning or are they okay just as molded? I did come across some no big deal sink marks at the tail end of the fuselage top and bottom..
