In most decal sheets, the kit name and the like are printed and sealed with decal film just like the "normal" kit decals...

Spiros my friend, here's one example of my use of these numbers, sealed with Microscale decal film, from the Hawker GB.

Beside letters and numbers, punctuation marks (periods, commas, etc) are also very useful. In your picture you will notice a period after the year of manufacture on that decal sheet. I used two of the periods from my old decal sheets as eyeballs on my 1/48 RAF pilot figure. Hell of a lot easier than painting them and they look great too.
