VW Typ 100 conversion

    Yet another VW

    After the war, production of the VW resumed with some very basic models.

    One of these were the Typ 100. It was a shortened version intended as a tow-truck for cargo and such. The base for this conversion is as always the Tamiya VW kit.

    First, the top is cut in half.




    Fortunately I had a paint- accident some years back, and the aft section of that one is being used as a template.

    Having wanted to convert this one for ages, I decided to push on with the conversion.

    The floorpan had to be shortened, and my guess was about 1 cm.




    for added strength I wanted the central box to extend in between the seats, enabling the gearlever cover to cover both parts.

    Old end.

    In order to check where to cut the old end is once again in use.

    As mentioned in my Typ 60 log, I still keep the end of a disaster around to be used as template for lots of other projects. It is also used here to testfit the changes, and thus it is nearing the end of its useful life.




    Cutting, testfitting, cutting, testfitting – repeat.

    Well, I have some time ago praised my resharpable scalpel blades, but nonetheless decided to use a fresh one for this project.


    The old blade will not be thrown away though, but will be sharpened and put to good use again. I know it is not a lot of money to buy a new blade, but when it is possible to reuse something, why not do so? Not to save money, but to save resources. After all we only have this one earth.

    Getting there?

    Been testfitting like a madman today.

    I really think I am close to have the fit where I want it (!) At least that is my opinion that I will not get it to fit any nicer with the skills and tools I have right now.



    The rear part needs to be widened (indeed the whole chassis need to be widened on these kits), so it is placed under pressure overnight.

    Now, the enginehood is something to discuss. In my VW bookazine it looks like the hood is the same as in the “Kastenwagen”, but the pictures online shows the two I found to have what appears to be the normal hood.



    The CMK conversion offers a new hood and an access hatch from above. That looks like the real deal to me, and I suspect the online versions are later conversions of beetles? (They also have same-size wheels wich I may borrow for this project)

    Nice work, Erik (@airbum). VWs have a lot of changes as the time goes by, and I would that there would be even more changes during a war. Sometimes trying to nail down a specific configuration can be frustrating, but I am sure you will figure it out.
