A-1H Skyraider aboard USS Midway June, 1965
During the Viet Nam War the Skyraider saw extensive service. Aside from attack duties, it was used in various forms as transports, ambulances, freighters, target tugs, and rescue helicopter escorts. Twice, Skyraiders from VA-25 and VA-176 engaged in air to air combat with Mig-17's and scored one kill on each occasion.
Douglas' catch phrase for the Skyraider was that "It could carry anything but the kitchen sink". To help prove this point, on June 20,1965, Lt Commander Ed Greathouse flew this aircraft, "Paper Tiger II" off Midway with a toilet attached to a bomb rack. I have not found the results of this mission nor heard any comment from the enemy that may have been struck by it. Lets hear it for our troops sense of humor.
Good work on the Spad, Frank - (love the armament)...:)
Skyraiders---one of the best. Great looking build.
One of the great "American Standard" stories of the Vietnam War and the SPAD.
Neat model and a A/C with out the Hornet painted on the side of it.
Two thumbs up,
Great Skyraider Frank. Like it 🙂
