Airfix 1/72 Red Arrows Hawk XX308 East Fortune Airfield.

August 12, 2021 · in Aviation · 20 · 2.1K

Another one that's been in the pile for quite some time.

I finally got the nerve up to do it as I'd finally figured out a way to show the detcord up nicely.

Primed with Tamiya Pink
Painted with Humbrol Arrow Red, Colourcoats Light Aircraft Grey, Dark Sea Grey, RAF Oxford Blue, Tamiya Nato Black, Flat White, Rubber Black, Clear Red, Clear Green, Flat Aluminium and Xtreme Metals Aluminium.
Detcord and dividing screen UMP White Wash.
Finished with Aqua Gloss.
Decals Xtradecal X72085 2008 Display Aircraft
The Pitot was replaced by a Master Brass one
Some vaping wire at the rear end for diesel pipes.

Thanks for looking,
Cheers,
Alistair

  1. Great work, Alistair! I really enjoyed seeing the Red Arrows in Missouri back in 2019.

    • Thanks very much.
I've been lucky enough to see them a few times and it's always thrilling.

      Cheers,
      Alistair

    • Yeah, seeing them out here in Huntington Beach in October 2019 was great - them, the Snowbirds and the Thunderbirds.

  2. Nice job. Finally got to see them at the Miramar Air Show back in September of 2019. Very impressive.

  3. Nice work on your build, I like the way the finish came out.

  4. Flashy & Snazzy, Alistair - nice work on this kit. 'Like' button hit!

  5. Your usual excellent job is obvious here, Alistair!
The detonating cord looks very realistic.
Of course, I love the Red Arrows: I am very lucky to be stationed in 114CW, Tanagra Air Base, where The Red Arrows come every year, roughly at the start of April, and stay for a full month for training (meaning three "missions" every day, usually doing their full exhibition). They are wonderful people, all of them, they feel the base as their second home.

  6. Great build as usual, Alistair @alistairfgauld
The Red Arrows are almost always present at airshows in the Netherlands and therefore I have seen them quite often as well.
They fly their formations so tight.
The information from Spiros @fiveten makes me understand now why they are able to perform so perfectly.

    • Thanks very much.
When I was working at Leuchars Signal Box the Open day was one of our highlights as we had one of the best seats in the house for all the flying displays.

      Cheers,
      Alistair

  7. Good looking Hawk Alistair, nicely done.

  8. That pink primer worked very well, Alastair, I've just watched coverage of them at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, definitely liked.

  9. Nice work on a really tiny plane, Alistair (@alistairfgauld). You have solved the problem of how to do the det cord. I have a couple of 1/48 Hawks, but I keep worrying about how to do the canopy and the cord. Thanks for the idea on how to do it.

  10. Love the Red Arrows and you've put together a really nice-looking kit Alistair Gauld (@alistairfgauld). You just need 8 more now ha ha.

I've always fancied doing a whole display team and been trying to figure out a way to mimic the coloured smoke, using cotton wool and wire. I think it'd be great to have them suspended in the air.

    Great job!
