Ernie D. Latham, Bob Trottier, and Roger Dale Weatherbee in Dayton, OH at the USAF Museum. Three fighter pilots of the 49th, each with 50 missions in combat. Taken in the mid-90s.
When my dad was shot down in his B-24 he got R&R in Rome. Met another pilot also on R&R. They got a little drunk for three or four days. After that, Dad asked the pilot about his unit. He was commander of a 51 outfit. Dad asked him to request him for his unit and the Major complied. When my father reported to this unit, Dad asked for another favor. "Can you have me transferred to a P-38 unit?"
"Oh s**t, Latham, you're more trouble than you're worth."
That's how Dad got into the 49th in June or July '43. On the trip to Dayton, we ran into that Major. The P-51 unit was having a reunion. Amazing to live in such a small world.
An equally awesome pic, Roger!
