Metcalfe card models , street scene

May 26, 2024 · in Diorama · 13 · 148

Well this one is the last of my postings for a while as I am fully up to date with completed builds so I thought I would finish with something completely different for me, the inspiration for building this is my hope one day to have the time, space and money to build a model railway layout.

What you see is typical of early 20th century terraced housing stock that can still be found in abundance in every town and city in the UK , usually solidly built, cosy little homes which until recently were affordable for young couples starting out on life's great adventure, like all housing now the price of even these modest little homes is beyond the reach of many...

Metcalfe produce an impressive range of buildings from houses of all types to factories and business properties and of course all the buildings you would find in and around shunting yards and railway stations. They are an easy and enjoyable little project and allow the imagination to create little snippets of everyday life.

For the base I used a cheap picture frame and added the guttering and drainpipes , the figures and the telephone box also the delivery van from my local model railway store which is where I bought the kit , the tractor and driver came from the Short Stirling I recently posted here.

  1. My late great-aunt used to live in one of those in Bacup in Lancashire. Those do bring back memories (though I only visited once or twice). Excellent rendition of a very evocative model.

  2. My grandparents used to have a corner shop where Charlies Chippy is.

  3. A beautiful street scene, Neil @neil-foster

  4. Nicely done, Neil, brings back memories of the first house I bought and the great hobby of railway modelling.

  5. That’s cool, Neil. I hope you get your layout one day.

    • Thanks John, the thing is most railway hobbyists have been at it for decades and building their layout as they go, even if I had the space which I don't I reckon to start from scratch and do it properly would cost me 5 grand gulp !

  6. I can hear the Coronation Street Theme... or Dr Who looking at that dio.

  7. Excellent job and and really attractive result, Neil!

  8. Thanks Spiros , something different is good for the mind I think.
