Airfix 1/72 McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 RIAT Greenham Common 1983
I really swithered about sticking this up as I think it's far from my best work.
It took four repaints to get it to this stage and it shows in the loss of surface detail.
Towards the end this was an effort in perseverance and sheer bloody-mindedness that I wasn't going to let some plastic and paint get the better of me
But, I thought, I have learned so much from the errors made that will be useful in the future that I would post the pictures.
It looks OK at best but...
It does look good in the cabinet though 😀
Primed with Mr.Finishing Surfacer black 1500
Painted with.
Colourcoats Dark Gull Grey and Oxford Blue.
Tamiya Flat White, Rubber Black, Semi-Gloss Black, Nato Green and Nato Black.
Humbrol Signal Red.
Finished with Citadel Nuln Oil Wash for the undercarriage and a Windsor & Newton Galeria Satin Varnish.
Decals from XtraDecal
AM Eduard Cockpit PE Set which, I found out, doesn't play well with a closed cockpit
It is what it is as part of an ongoing series of Phantoms.
Now on to the next one with a much simpler paint scheme.
Thanks for looking,
Cheers,
Alistair
It looks great, Alistair. The radome looks different than any other F-4 I’ve seen. Was it a mod peculiar to Boscombe Down?
Thanks very much.
The radome was a special doppler nose fitted to XT597 for use at Boscombe.
It was unique to this airframe and I forgot to mention it in the aftermarket as it was a resin piece from Freightdog models.
I was gonna say this build looks like a Home Run - but it's more like a Grand Slam!
I've always admired this livery scheme, and yours does look great, Alistar, even with all that paint.
Thanks very much,
Awesome!
Thanks so much, most kind
A great looking Phantom, Alistair!
Your perseverance paid off!
Thanks Spiros,
Sheer cussedness I'm afraid
A wonderful looking Phantom, Alistair @alistairfgauld
Looks perfectly fine to me now.
Thanks very much,
Under lights in the cabinet it does look good.
She looks gorgeous, Alistair @alistairfgauld! Great paintscheme.
Thank you so much
As much as I love Phantoms, you are a better man than me to tackle this scheme! You pulled it off excellently!
Thanks Greg,
It was a lot more complicated than I thought it was going to be.
