Marine Corps Guadalcanal F4F-4 Wildcat

January 29, 2025 · in Aviation · · 7 · 195

This is the Tamiya 1/48 kit that has been posted here by many others. I sought to build a USMC version as used on Guadalcanal in 1942.

Kit is fairly simple except as others have noted, the undercarriage is most complex and a challenge to get exactly right and to fit. I was about 95% successful.

Paint was Vallejo Air with a coat of Pledge before decals and then a Matt coat to finish.

I benefited from other posts here on techniques for painting, panel lines, decaling, and cementing. Thanks to you pros! I’m still learning.

  1. Good build and painting, Mark. This kit s on my "soon-to-be-built" shelf. I appreciate your warning about the landing gear, but I also think that concern applies to all the other kits of the F4F series. Like questions about interior colors, it would seem to be Grumman's doing as much as the kit manufacturers! My only suggestion would be to take a pointy tipped toothpick and touch up the canopy framing a little. Congratulations on this good looking Wildcat1

  2. You are doing well, grasshopper. 🙂

  5. Appreciate the comments. One step at a time for me.
