Hasegawa 1/32 Scale Bf 109 G-4 Trop

April 7, 2013 · in Aviation · · 9 · 2.9K

Hello All,

This is my first post on iModeler. I've been on an "Axis Kick" as of late-I've got 7 different 1/32nd scale models going right now: E-4/7, G-2, K-4, FW 190 A-4, D-9 Ki-84, Ki-61 (Yes I suffer from Modeling ADHD!). Since I enjoy the research/History of each subject I model, that's just the way it is. This model represents a Bf 109 G-4 Trop belonging to 8./JG53 PikAs "Ace of Spades" fighter group based in San Pietro, Sicily 1943. The pilot of this A/C is unknown. I found a photo of this squadron showing some of the machines that seemed to be randomly painted with a darker color than the factory RLM 79 sand yellow. Controversy surrounds the darker color, as it could have been RLM 80 olive green or some field brew of a darker shade of the RLM 79. I opted for the RLM 80 as the RLM painting directives in 1943 were probably still pretty well followed during this time and applied it using "artistic interpretation” of various field applied photo refs I have. This project was built OOB except for the seat belts (Eduard), wing gun barrels (hypodermic needles). I used Model Master Enamel paints, applied the standard black pre-shading top and bottom and slowly build up the colors. The chipping on the props and fuselage was done with a silver Berol prismaCOLOR pencil. The antennae lines are made with pantyhose elastic nylon. Total time into this project was about 25 hours which is normal for me because I'm a slow builder. This is one of the first 1/32nd scale kits I've built since I was a kid. I really enjoyed the build and would highly recommend this kit to modeler of all skill levels. Hope you enjoy it as much as I had building it...Now on to that Ki 84 Hyate!

Happy modeling,

Erich
