1/72 Scale is turning out to be a good place to start
I came back to scale modeling and re-started from scratch. Since then, I've taken in a couple of shows and I am slowly expanding my range of supplies and sources. I have found these 1/72 scale kits to be a great chance to practice, experiment and learn. I just finished my quarantine ME-109 and P-47. (I can't imagine the feeling a Luftwaffe pilot must have had in his stomach when he saw this truck coming at him). I find these kits easy to build, sharp in detail, and loaded with opportunity to try out my airbrush/acrylic paint blending/panel line applying/scribing/gluing skills. My P-47 represents the first time I painted the white accents (did not use the decals provided), masked (instead of free-hand) the canopy, and actually glued a canopy in place with no glueprints (used PVA). These kits don't use much paint and are easy on shelf space. I admit, I have lost some of the smaller parts onto the floor somewhere after they squirted out of my tweezers. But hey, I'm having fun. Also, my stash of stuff is tahing over my workbench. Anybody else have that problem?
Beautiful builds, David!
I agree that 1/72 is a good place to (re)start this lovely hobby, offering many benefits.
Bring them on!
All the best!
I started as a kid with 1:72 airplanes, still have most of them. Neat scale, indeed because easy to store, built or unbuilt!
Looks like your on an excellent path to rediscover old skills and learn new ones as well. Great way to restart using a nice scale and with kits that usually don't break the bank. Nicely done David.
Great job there. Looks like you taken well to the airbrush, acrylics, masking, and such! Welcome back.
Totally agree. The selection of subjects available in 1/72 scale is huge, plus if you like multiple paint schemes it's relatively easy to build several models to represent them all.
They both look great!
Most of my builds were 1/72 scale, some even smaller. I built some interesting subjects in 1/144 scale.
I only build 1/72! I like everything being the same scale, and when you've been at it awhile display storage space becomes an issue! A great entrée back to the hobby!
