1/48 Airfix Messerschmitt Bf109E

August 6, 2020 · in Aviation · · 20 · 1.8K

This is the first model I made from an over 3 year hiatus of model making. I made it when the pandemic started when I was laid off. In turn that’s what started me to make models again.

This is a nice little kit. Everything pretty much snapped together. But now that I see it in the photos I see all the mistakes I made. Seem lines, gaps and steps. They’re never perfect I guess.

Painted with Model Master Enamels and weathered with soft pastels. I wasn’t ready to airbrush the mottling... need some practice.

  1. I couldn’t spot no seams! Very nice build and finish, specially the underside wheathering!

  2. Good stuff. Photos are our worst critic but they also help sometimes to spot something we miss, especially close-ups

  3. Hi Jeremy @jmillan!
This is a very nice model allaround, painting and weathering included.
As per your above statement: "This is the first model I made from an over 3 year hiatus of model making. I made it when the pandemic started when I was laid off. In turn that’s what started me to make models again."...well, it makes this model even more special.
    Bring them on, my friend!

  4. Sorry to hear about your job situation. Could hapoen to anyone. I' m really happy I have been able to keep mine so far.

Model looks really nice! Think you will master German mottling in no time, just finetune paint and pressure combo and have a vision in your head of final result.

  5. Sorry to hear that you're laid off, Jeremy. @jmillan
As Spiros said, it makes it even more special and gave you relaxation in this difficult time.
The plane looks great, I personally like the underside weathering a lot.

  6. Whats not to like! Well done my friend. (Do I see some artistic creativity with the decals?)

  7. Jeremy, I gave up on building the perfect model years ago. There's always a fault or mistake somewhere. Just have some fun building them for your miniature museum. BTW, that 109 looks good to me, nicely done.

  8. Thanks for the comments fellas.

  9. Looks like a masterful Messerschmidt to me, great job!

  10. Sharp looking 109E!

  11. Jeremy, @jmillan
Your "Emil" looks fantastic. Great job here. It's useless trying to get the "perfect" model. It's next to impossible to do, as we often tend to be our own worst critic. I know that personally, I am harder on myself than anyone else could be.

There's only one way to get good at doing German Mottling, and that's to do it. Even to this day I have never got it perfect on the very first time. I always have to go back and adjust it a little here or there.
Keep in your mind how you want it to look, and it will happen. The "Keine Bombe" decals made me chuckle... I picked up on that too.

I'm also sorry to hear that you have been laid off work. I hope that things will get better for you soon. Meanwhile there is always another model somewhere that is begging to get built. I'll be looking for more of your work in the headlines.

Take care and stay safe. I also pressed the "Liked" button.
