Gott mit uns ('God [is] with us') is a phrase commonly used in heraldry in Prussia (from 1701) and later by the German military during the periods spanning the German Empire (1871–1918), Weimar Republic (1918–1933), and Nazi Germany (1933–1945). It was also commonly used by Sweden in most of its wars and especially as a battle cry during the Thirty Years' War.
So, I looked it up, not having heard of it before, and he provides these examples:
I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.
What immediately caught my eye was that he was talking about small-ish, colonial-type, expeditions.
I wonder if he'd say that was true of WW1 and 2, which practically bankrupted the United Kingdom, and devastated the USSR, and most of Eastern and Central Europe, and Germany as well.
Bob Dylan once said “If God’s on their side he’ll stop the next war”.
