A-26c Jersey Bounce question. Please advise

October 15, 2024 · in How-to · · 7 · 108

I've been working on Monograms 1/48 a-26c for some time now and need some advice on decals. About half of the sources I've seen (mainly decal sets) have the nacelles black with the underside wings black as well. The other half have only the nacelles black with the under wings nmf. I've elected to go with the black nacelles and underside of the wings black (see photo).

Going with this option means the black USAF and dark blue national insignia won't show up. That being so should I go with red USAF letters and national insignia left over from the original kit decals or should I paint the underside of the wings nmf and use the black lettering and traditional national insignia? Can anyone advise? @tcinla @fiveten @blackmopane @johnb and any others!?!

  1. From what I see on A-26's it was red letters and a standard red white and blue national insignia. Interesting side note, a B-17 and a B-24 were named Jersey Bounce

  2. Thanks for the input @beauslx !

Interestingly enough when I was in college I went on a choir tour to upstate New York. We were assigned host families for the night from the church we performed at. As I was unpacking my bag in the guest bedroom of the host family I saw a shadow box on the wall- upon closer inspection it turned out to have a medal of honor in it! Come to find that the woman who was hosting us was the daughter of Forest Vosler who served as a radio operator on board the B-17 Jersey Bounce Jr. That you mentioned and was awarded the medal of honor. I never forgot the name of the man or the plane and 15 years later I still intend to build a kit of that aircraft when time (and space) permit

  3. Though my experience on the subject is limited, I would agree with Robert's comments, David.

  4. Also no useful advice from my side, David @dbutlr, but I agree with the comments of Robert @beauslx.

  5. Hi David. Red lettering on black planes, black on silver painted ones. Yellow was also used on some which were still wear OD at time of Korean War.

  6. David, the national markings on black airplanes would normally not have the blue surrounds, just the white star flanked by the white / red bars. There are always exceptions, of course, references are your friend in that regard. The USAF markings on black surfaces should be red.
