I have been making some progress on the painting. I got the first coat of base color on. It is amazing how much paint it took but it is done. I also painted in some of the repaired areas or areas that were painted over. I will start tomorrow with the next layer of color variation and shading. I am pretty happy with how things are going so far.

It's incredible the amount of damage these aircraft would sustain. I was just reading about Louis Zamperini and his B-24 "Superman"

This is actually Louis with his hand in one of the 20 MM holes in the fuselage.

Here he is looking inside the same hole. This photo was taken from inside the plane.

It returned after a raid on a Japanese held Pacific Island, and it had something like 547 holes in it... and a dead crew member on board, with several others wounded. Because his plane was so badly damaged, he wasn't flying in it when he went down on the search and rescue mission. That one was named "Green Hornet", and was a "lemon" of sorts.

It's strange how sometimes the B-24 would go up in flames so quickly, like it did with my Dad's childhood friends plane named "Chief", (who was part of the 98th BG) and shot down in flames over Italy by a Bf-109G6, yet on other times it would keep on flying similar to how a B-17 or P-47 would with damage galore. Luck of the draw I guess, or the grace of God. Maybe a little of both ?

Your work on this one is spectacular. I am looking forward to seeing your next update. I also like the color choices you have made. Like you, I believe that some of these B-24's that flew in North Africa had a Light Blue underside.

Sometimes when things are going good, something bad happens. I was in the stage of adding some different shades of OD to the upper surfaces, and adding some markings when something very bad happened. I am not really sure what happened other than I accidently knocked over a cup of mixed OD paint that I was about to pour into my airbrush. I didn't just knock it over though it was more violent than that splattering paint all over my work bench. What I did not immediately notice was that it all landed on top of my wing, and flowed around under it too. When I noticed I wiped it up but it completely remove all the topcoats I had put on the kit.

I let it set for for couple of days and then using some very fine sand paper wet sanded the surface to feather the edges and started all over. I primed, painted the panel and rivet lines and then put my base coat on. I had to do this for both the top and bottom. All in all the results look fairly seamless to me.

I did get some markings painted also. According to my research one rudder on the plane was replaced at some point. From the pictures I am guessing it was the starboard rudder. I painted it a different OD and then in the pictures is shows that the area above and below the white were darker. I originally thought it was black but a picture of the port side doesn't show it. I would appreciate it if anyone has information on the 514th Bomb Squadrons markings I would greatly appreciate it.

A pity about all the extra work you had to do, Walt @luftwaffe-birdman
The repair is however done nicely and no signs of what happened are visible.

Excellent save, my friend @luftwaffe-birdman! Totally unnoticeable. Great progress, too!

I added some more color to the OD, and am liking the way things are going so far. I decided to take a break and do something really quick as well as work on some parts I bypassed during the build of the B-24.

For something quick and easy I pulled out a kit I bought on a whim, the Pegasus Hobbies V-2 Rocket, Snap Tight. The parts count is incredibly low, I believe there are 15 parts for rocked than launch pad total. The fit is actually pretty good and it went together fairly well. The surface texture of the kit is a little pebbly so after cleaning up the seams and putting int the rivets along the seams I gave it a coat of MrHobby, MrFinishing Surfacer 1500 Gray. A quick wet sand after seems to have made the surface much better. The amazing thing is the size of the rocket. I have a couple pictures of it next to the B-24. Both of these models are in 1/48th scale. I haven't decided but am leaning towards one of the Splinter schemes for the rocket.

I also started working on the landing gear for the B-24. I cannot recommend Armory Models resin wheels enough. They are spectacular, the wheels are beautifully detailed and the photo-etch is easy and fits perfectly. The only piece that didn't make any sense was the nose wheel fender. The fender seems to be made for a kit that doesn't exist yet, there was no way it was going to fit the Monogram nose gear. You do have to drill out the hub for the axles but it lets you get the hole just the right size. I got mine just right, they fit the Vector Resin gear legs nicely and also the Monogram nose gear. I cleaned up and did a little reshaping for the kit nose gear fender.

Walt - That dark stripe on the rudder looks tonally the same dark shade as the blue part of the RAF fin flash.

Tom, @tcinla, I didn't notice that. I just knew from reading that one of the rudders had been replaced during the life of the plane. I haven't found a source that even shows me the white stripe as a markings for the 514th, it is just noted in the pictures I have seen of both sides of the aircraft. This is always the challenges when trying to depict colors from black and white pictures. That note on your part is something I am going to have to think about. I just wish I had found the documentation that Eduard used when they did the markings for their 2011 kit release in 1/72. It seems my decal sheet may be missing some markings.

Thanks as always Spiros, @fiveten, for your kind words. I appreciate that you follow this build so faithfully.

That's a fine detailed landing gear, Walt @luftwaffe-birdman
A nice step aside with the V2, are you giving it the same camouflage pattern as seen on the boxart.

I really like this simple kit of the V-2 John, @johnb. I am sure I will paint it in a camo scheme, I am just not sure which one I am going to do. I found a site that is dedictated to all things V-2 and they had section dedicated to paint and markings. I will be doing one of the following, which do you like?

I have the set of books called "Air Force Colors" by Dana Bell. I will look into it and see if he had anything to say about the colors on the rudder or anything on the unit.

Those tire / wheels are incredible ! They look just like the real thing...

Here are a few pictures I took of "Witchcraft". I have some photos of the nose wheel too but I have to do some digging. Other than the tread pattern being different, but these are modern tires. You can see the nose wheel in one picture, but I have several good close up photos that show everything including the fender.

The V-2 is a pretty big rocket. I have seen a few of them over the years.

The one I remembered the most was on display at White Sands Missile Range. I stopped by to look at it several times when I was stationed nearby at Ft. Bliss in the Army. This one on display was painted in big Black and White squares. It would be an alternative if you wanted to do something different from a camouflaged version. Either way would look great I think.

I could actually see some of the old launch sites through our Tank's telescopic gun sights when we were far enough up north in the desert on training maneuvers. They looked a lot like this picture here, but they were a red / orange color going from memory.

Wow, I was shocked to hear about the spill accident. But man what a recovery ! Dude... you can't tell it even happened.

Keep it going brother, you are on a roll !

Thanks Louis, @lgardner. If you find anything out about the markings, please do let me know. I like the black and white checker also, but I think I will go with a splinter scheme. The fun thing is the kit is cheap enough and easy enough to build that I could easily do multiples...not that I will. If someone came out with it and the trailer I would most definitely get that though.
