Initial thoughts – what to make

With Pedro off to a good start I have been thinking – what to do

Now, as @holzhamer already explained the kit is new and has received a lot of attention everywhere. I have been diggin’ into the sturdy box, and find the plastic very high in detail.

I was first told about this kit by Eric Berg @eb801, and have been looking forward to get going. I have been quite busy with lame excuses not to build this summer, but Pedro challenged me to a build of this one – and on top of that he asked that it would be a “Blitz” build.

Now, I have been doing a little bit of armchair aviation, and will have to think very hard about the colors of the E-1 I shall build here.

So far there are a few possibilities; Of course there may be a OOB build, but where is the fun in that? – no offense to the many people that will do just that – there are some quite interesting markings, and I have to say I am a bit dragged towards the plane of “Pripps”. Some 1100 E-1’s were manufactured (depending on sources) and the only export version were to Spain, where one even got another engine, but that would be a bit too challenging for a blitzbuild. So, a Luftwaffe or a Legion Condor version. I have read that there were a E-1/b that had ETC50’s under the wings, but so far haven’t been able to find a proper picture of one. Some work can begin before the decision has to be made, so I’ll be off to the bench.

Thank you for the challenge Pedro!

Indeed a great challenge, Erik @airbum
Also looking forward to your build and what scheme it eventually will be.
Personally I would go for a Luftwaffe version.

An equal great entry as Pedro's, my friend @airbum!
REALLY looking forward to see your "plans" on it! One thing for sure: it will be an astonishing ride!

Looking forward to see what scheme you will choose and how this Wingsy kit builds out. But I vote for the Luftwaffe version. I notice that a lot of profiles of the same plane differ wildly and I find it hard to decide which is accurate. I address this dilemma in my latest Fw190A-8 WIP group posting.

    Erik,
This is definitely going to be on my watch list, and it is a great idea to see both of you guys building up the same kit. You and Pedro are the two most knowledgeable people I know with the different varieties of the 109 and all other things that are Luftwaffe related………..

I am excited to see your thoughts on this one, particularly when it comes to the fit of the parts and the quality of the kit provided plastic. Pedro is off to a good start with his model. I am sure you will be posting an update soon. Judging from what I have read about this kit so far, it has all been very good.

There are some pictures of various early Emil’s on the Internet, but I’m not sure if I have seen any of them as Jabo’s. I would personally gravitate towards a plane wearing markings from a training school. Some of them have some neat looking unit emblems……. and painting a standard splinter scheme could be to your benefit.

In the end however, this choice is entirely up to you and I’m sure that you will definitely pick out something unique. No matter your choice I am sure it will look fantastic.

Between your own “Kindergarten” style of building with your numerous 109’s, and now seeing how you and Pedro have started building up these two, you are both inspiring me to build up some Luftwaffe fighters in my typical “Iron Werke” style.

Right now I’m busy with my 1/48 A6M’s and Airfix P-40’s. They’re being built following your own methods for the Kindergarten style of building.

My next group of Kindergarten builds will likely be done with either 109’s or 190’s as the subject.

Thanks my friend for starting this one and I will definitely keep an eye on this for updates.

    Stay safe.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how you and Pedro deal with this kit. I've trying to get hold one but the Wingsy stockists here in China haven't obtained it yet.

Thank you for the many comments, and apologies for having stalled!
@johnb, had hoped to be further by now, so just have to get going?
@fiveten, I shall be eager to see my plans too my friend!
@holzhamer, thanks for the pictures. Still thinking. . .
@eb801, always a real challenge to decide what to choose as the least wrong!
@lgardner thanks for the kind words and thoughts – it all helps a lot!
@chinesegeorge, you have something to look forward to – I suppose the situation with extremely high demand for containerspace is reversed at your end too, making cargo incredibly slow and expensive. It will eventually get there I’m cetrtain.
    And now;

    On a wing. . .

While I still have to decide on the final color, work commences

Not as usual with the cockpit – Pedro elegantly showed it can be installed quite late in the build, so the Wings were the first to get some attention.

Having cut the parts for the wheelwell, I test-fitted the lot

Nice tight fit as mentioned in the other wingsy build in progress.

However, the small part is only labelled “14”, and on the instructionsheet there is a mention of L and R

No big deal though, as the fit is quite clear once the larger part is installed.

The upper wing is clearly intended for later versions, and you have to cut the opening for the appropriate version. I drilled and cut before assembly.

And those of you that know my unstoppable quest for challenges will not be surprised to see the hole in the bottom for the vent. . . .

next up I shall race to catch up on Pedros build just a bit, but he is more than a hair in front of me. No rest for. . . . .

I’m so glad to see your 109 picking up motion Erik!
Your wise option to open those wing MG holes before glueing the upper and lower wing pieces is something I should have thought...but didn’t so. Good planning saves later troubles.

The bottom vent I will come around to drill it up also, as I will to that small scoop on the starboard side of the engine (as you will also I’m sure)
    Keep it up 😉

Good to see you're picking up thepace, Erik @airbum
Well thought preperations always help at later steps.
    Looking forward to it.

    Thank you gents!
@holzhamer nothing like an open vent 🙂
@fiveten, well, speed – not really, but doing my best to catch up here. . .
@johnb, you said it – the 6 P’s always helps (Proper pre-flight planning prevents poor performance)

    Glue – and another hole

I glued up the wing and made another hole, just as predicted by Pedro

The wing goes together very nicely – well made parts help a lot.

The wingtips are installed last, and the end of the wings taper slightly so that you get a very nice snug fit there (sorry – I did not take a picture – here it is hidden while the thick glue sets)

As Pedro mentioned the hole in the starboard side had to be drilled out

It will need a small amount of LqS to make the side flush with the fuselage.

next up, to keep reversing things I may start the fuselage before heading for the cockpit

Your remark towards the wing MG hatch as a possible superdetailer area hits the nail in the head. Some folks out there with the will and expertise can scratch build the MG 17 chamber… and it’s been a few months since the kit became available and there’s little or nothing from the after market companies for this kit ?!? Nice progress made my friend, carry on 😉

You can b=never super-detail an 109 too much!

    Great progress, Erik @airbum
Looking forward to the MG hatch being detailed.
Opening those intakes is adding a lot to the final build.
