Call me crazy or just a chap that likes to start new WIP threads, but this is a project that has been on hold for a couple of years between me and Louis Gardner (@lgardner) and this GB is just the right medicine to kick it forwards.

I won’t dabble much about the plane or the model itself, except to say that I still am very grateful to ICM for getting us a XXI century mould of this important German medium bomber in the quarter scale.

My take will be (obviously!) a KG/2 “Holzhammer” machine U5+GA using an old Superscale decal sheet I have for numerous years

Inside the box I have a huge amount of AM stuff, from PE parts to resin (radios; the tail correction set from Vector, exhaust tubes, MGs and bombs) and masks, including one I never tried before meant for the splinter camouflaging.
Montex masks for the clear parts

Some time ago, in between painting sessions of other kits, I started assembling PE details on the undercarriage and bomb bay and proceed to paint them O2 and weathered along

Same thing for the main wheels in resin…

    And the kit’s propeller…

    And the exhaust pipes.

Glued some bits of the cockpit plastic parts, but nothing too serious

and using a pen highlighted the areas for cutting the plastic and replace the tail for the resin replacement

All in all, it will be a fun project, one I certainly hope to detail as much as I can - much as I’ve been doing on the older brother of the Do.17 - the Do.217 E I have on another WIP- and hoping that Louis can tag along soon for a dual build endeavour 🙂

Is that surgery I see on the horizon? I am strapped in Pedro. Good call to make some minor subassemblies now and then when spraying other stuff @holzhamer.

    Some exiting steps ahead, Pedro.
    Looking forward to that replacement.
    The paintwork looks awesome.

One of your usual amazing entries, my friend @holzhamer, oozing modeling quality!
Nice progress, so far; looking forward to see the resin tail integration!
    Great extras "collection", too!

    Hello Pedro, @holzhamer
This is an amazing build that you have started. I can already see you painstaking attention to details and your trademark oil painting.

Thank you for the invitation ! I will bring mine down from the Luftwaffe stash, and as time permits, join you in this endeavor. I know that we have been talking about doing this for several years now, and I can't believe how fast this time has gone by.

By the looks of things, your model is definitely going to be magnificent. The decal set I have chosen to use for mine is the one where the devil is holding a pistol and pooping out a bomb, all while giving the one finger "salute". I have two (possibly 3) of these kits in the stash, so I might do the usual "Iron Werke" style of build and fire up the old Dornier assembly line.

One of these days we can start on our joint P-51 Mustang builds... 😉 Thanks for posting this.

Louis, you bet that the Pony assembly line isn’t that far away!
The machine you mention has the most iconic artwork of all Dornier 17. It shouldn’t be hard for you to track some photo references to back up the details, including some ID bands painted on the tail surfaces and wing chord, if my memory serves me well.
As usual, if you need some images or data for specific areas of the Dornier let me know

This is a great build so far, Pedro. Some fine detailing work already done. As usual, you have really brought out some fine detail beautifully in the bomb bay and wheel bays. I don't see many Do-17s built in this scale - I am really looking forward to the result. I hope Louis joins in with his own as this is such an interesting looking airplane and very historically significant. What has been your experience with Montex masks for canopies? Do they leave any residue? I have quite a few sets but have been nervous about using them in case they don't come of as cleanly as Eduard masks on clear parts.

    Hey Collin!
My experience with Montex vinyl masks is not the best I’m afraid.
Although they carry a very comprehensive selection of make, both in subject/scales and level of masking (Canopies and canopy+Markings), I had some glue residues when peeling off the masks in clear parts, and also some precut needs trimming to fit.
Like you I have several in stash, so might as well use them right?
Any Kabuki is preferable to vinyl imo

Looks great, Pedro. I have one of these too and will be following along. I’ve been on the fence about building it. I’m pretty much doing WW2 bombers in 1/72 these days.

Ohhh, that would be a great idea put to practice Greg
I’ve seen Airfix 72nd kit and it’s looks very appealing...go on bring that one along 😉

I am looking forward to following this build. If this kit is like the He-111 it should be a great build. I have the Monogram kit and will someday build it (I Hope). I will follow your build to get some good ideas on how to make it look from your build.

Give a try John, after seeing your Airfix Blenheim I’m sure it will be a terrific model, and a good comparison between equal medium bombers of both sides

@luftwaffe-birdman Walt, Untill I build the Dornier I can’t say if it’s a great model or not, but at least judging by the eye it sure looks promising. The Monogram Heinkel is still in my stash, almost as staked as this one in terms of AM stuff... one day but not so soon

Great subject Pedro, the Do-17Z is one rather unique light to medium bomber early in the war. Very prominent in the early stages of WWII. Along with the He-111 provided the main bomber threat in Europe and the UK. ICM has presented us with some wonderful new mold Ju-88's, He-111's and the Do-17. With only the Hobbycraft kit around for awhile in 48th scale, one I built way back in the early 90's when there was very little known about the kit, and sometimes ignorance is bliss. Not really caring that the fuselage had a bit of a banana shape once it was all together. Though lacking in details, it did assemble very well despite it's shortcomings. Will look forward to the much more modern ICM kit might motivate me to pick one up or start on the Monogram Do-217.
