Regarding brush-painted versus airbrush; The luftwaffe nearly always had all the equipment with them in this stage of the war, and would likely bring airbrushing equipment, and mottle was always by airbrush, even in the field. Your method does look very munch like it was made by airbrush with the blurred edges (and your dots are a lot more realistic than the one I made in this camo with my first try at an airbrush).

Regarding slats these were quite often pushed back in as one of the first actions after landing, and most likely were in for painting. I agree that it is not very often one gets a chance to see a 109 with slats open from above in pictures, but many pictures of them being maintained supports this, and your fine job of painting them RLM02 is quite correct @johnb.

Of course there are some very interesting ones with the mottle done by paintbrush, but I never saw this type being made by paintbrush. (one that springs to mind is the one with dense mottle that is very clearly done by paintbrush being tapped all over the light blue during the early years - one that I really would like to make, but I still have to pursuade myself that it will be hours and hours well spent on the paint) 🙂

@airbum, thanks a lot for the clear explanation, Erik. It was indeed in the early stages of the war. All seems correct like this, except for the mottles not matching exactly when the slats are closed. But as said by Spiros @fiveten, only a few will notice.

Looking great with decals on and the mottling looks utterly realistic, not too soft, not too hard, just perfect, my friend @johnb!

Decalling done, next will be the stencils which are quite a lot.

    John, (@johnb)

She looks wonderful as is without the stencils. I agree with what one of our "109 experten" Erik Gjørup (@airbum) had to say about the Luftwaffe having spray guns in North Africa. You have done a magnificent job with your camouflage work. Adding the stencils will be like adding icing on a cake. I think you are very close to having this one in the headlines section by the looks of things. If you ever decided you didn't want this one, I would be very proud to display it next to my 109 collection any day.

Stencils are on. A lot of smaller stencils are provided by Tamiya, but I only made use of the larger ones.
Exhausts painted in burned metal from ModelMaster and mounted.

Looks really great, my friend @johnb! Good decision not to use the tiniest of stencils, I doubt they would even bother reapplying them onto the desert camo...

Good call @johnb. The smaller stencils in these kits are usually a bit on the large side for the scale.

Yet another useful info regarding the stencils, my friend "109 Man" @airbum!
