Thanks for the invite, Felix. Your timing is spot on. I believe this build will fit the theme, if not, please let me know. @fxrobFelix

I am building the Airfix, 1/48, Hurricane, Tropical kit for my small tribute to the "last of the few", John "Paddy" Hemingway, DFC, AE.

I understand I can forgo the Trop parts to build a "standard" MK.I.
Aftermarket parts ordered. (photos will be added when I get them)
Plan to create my own painting masks for all markings.

    Constructive comments are welcome.

    KEEPING IT FUN!

Dear Gary @gwskat, your contribution is spot on and greatly appreciated! I also read about the passing of John Hemingway. How young they were up there, fighting. Suddenly it all seems very close again with the world going nuts these days.

As for the kit, i love the tropical version of this Airfix kit. The only thing that i don't like about the livery are these red and green worms. They are both a bit tricky to paint and defer from the otherwise beautiful tropical scheme.

I have built a few of these 1/48 Airfix Hurricanes. They are by far my favorite new tool kit made by them. The only problem I remember was having to sand the thickness of the main spar down just a little. This helps to get rid of an open seam on the leading edge of the wings. Otherwise it is a dream to build and the fit is spot on. I didn't have to use any putty or filler on mine.

I like everything here you have chosen, from the model, scale, manufacturer, but especially the pilot. Like you stated, the timing couldn't have been any better.

You can build the regular Hurricane using the parts in the box. This kit has additional parts included that allow you to build a Tropicalized version, so it should not be any troubles for you.

I'm looking forward to your next steps...

Looking forward to your build, gary (@gwskat). This should build into a really nice model. Custom markings will be fun.

The extra goodies showed up today.

Paints to be used. Like the paints. Not a fan of the new bottles.

Lots of goodies you have there, Gary. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Airfix’s early Hurricanes. I see why you don’t like those new paint bottles. I’ll be watching your build.

Nice collection of aftermarket parts, gary (@gwskat), and they will all look great in the model. I really like the AK Real Colors, and I have a bunch of the old paint line. The new bottles (which I am also not a fan of) supposedly have a new formula. I have used the new ones and they seem a little thinner, so they don't take quite as much thinner. Still paint great. Have you used the Dark Earth before? When I used it before, I thought the color might not quite be right. Let me know what you think when you get there.

I have not used the D.E. before, so thanks for the heads up, George.
The main reason I don't like the new bottles is not being able to give them a good stirring. Shaking is most likely okay but, after sitting for a period of time I never have a good feeling I was able to get the thick pigment loose on the bottom. I could remove the dropper spout and use a stick stirrer.
I really wanted to use SMS paints but I couldn't get all the colors.
Thanks for following and commenting. 👍

Yesterday I started working on the masks for the camo scheme.
Using Inkscape (an open-sourced, vector graphic based editor) I created the wings pattern. Eventually this artwork will be transferred to Cricut Cutter Design Space, to cut the masks.

Shown is a template, printed on paper, to test fit to the kit wings:

Nice work on the masks, gary (@gwskat). I have never heard of Inkscape before, but I need to take a look at it. My ways of getting stuff ready to cut in my wife's Cricut is very laborious.

    Hey George. Thanks.
FYI: Inkscape is not the most user friendly program but, the more I use it the better I'm getting at it. I often search for instructions on the web or youtube. Maybe there are better vector based programs available but I have not looked. I keep using it because the artwork, being vector curves, cuts nice and smooth once transferred to cricut.

Cricut is the only machine I have so its editor is what I have to use...and I agree, the editor can be a bit laborious. But, like Inkscape, the more I use it the better I'm getting at it.

All a part of the challenge of keeping it fun...
