Hi Rory @rory, thanks for looking. Yes, it’s the Fujimi kit, should arrive either today or tomorrow. I get a Chinese friend to buy all my kits and stuff these days off the internet, in return I give him English lessons once a week. My Chinese is very basic so it’s easier that way. That price shown in the picture is Chinese RMB, not sure how that equates to your currency, but we could look into shipping you a kit if you’re interested.

Thanks George, I have contacted Hiroby who has stock and do ship to South Africa, but I am awaiting their response regarding price and shipping.

Kevin’s just arrived with the Pepsi, it looks like a great kit, etched brake discs are included. Note to self, do the piping as you go along, and don’t spill cement on the windscreen.

Very nice looking kit, George @chinesegeorge
Kevin was definitely one of my favorite riders back then.
    Looking forward to it.

This one should be fun, George (@chinesegeorge). It's nice to get some photoetch with the kit. Good tips on what to avoid. Luckily my BMW doesn't have a windscreen.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, @bikequeen, @gblair, @rory, @johnb, @fiveten, let’s get this Pepsi fizzing.

As usual with these bike kits construction starts with the engine, divided into four sections. Colour call outs include aluminium, black, white, red, and the elusive “burnt umber”.

I remember quite a lot of discussion about this colour a few years ago on iModeler, I guess it’s mainly used on jet exhausts. I made a mix of bronze and metallic gray, you can possibly see how it came out in the pictures.

It’s also needed on the exhausts when I come to those, I might add a little blue to the mix. What do you guys and ladies think?

OK, that’s a start, next up is the rear wheel and swing arm assembly. Thanks for looking and happy modelling.

    Amazing start, my friend @chinesegeorge!
    And looking super already!
For adding some blue to the exhausts' colour, I vote "YES".
Looking forward to this superb project's progress!

Engine assembly looks great, George (@chinesegeorge). I think a blue tint would be perfect.

OK, @rory, @bikequeen, @gblair, @fiveten, @johnb, let’s have a look at the rear wheel assembly. Not much to it really, especially if you opt not to use the etched brake disc.

However if you do use the etch here are the instructions. Basically you have to remove the molded centre hub of the wheel and attach the three etched parts.

Interestingly the molded disc has the ventilation holes already drilled.

The difficulty is lining up the etched parts with each other.

I gave the wheel a coat of gloss white followed by spraying some Pearl Clear on top, but this doesn’t really show up very well.

Wrestled the tyre into place, applied the transfers, and job done.

Thanks for looking and happy modelling.

The etched parts really look nice once they are installed, George (@chinesegeorge). That certainly looks like the way to go. Having never built a motorcycle before, I am curious what type of transfers went on the tires. Were they decals that went on the rubber of the tires, or something else?

Hi George @gblair, thanks for looking and your kind comments. Fujimi supply plain water slide transfers for the tyres. They seem to have gone on OK, but I’ll apply some clear acrylic once they’ve completely settled just in case. The Tamiya kits have a kind of self adhesive dry transfer for the tyre markings instead, which you press on and then wet them to release the backing paper. I don’t suppose that you will have tyre markings on your BMW!

    Cheers for now.

Very interesting, George (@chinesegeorge). I wouldn't have thought that regular waterslide decals would work on the rubber of the tires, but they look really nice on yours. I would think that the dry transfer markings would work better. My BMW didn't come with any markings for the tires, but I suppose bright tire markings on a wartime motorcycle would have been counterproductive. I am not used to dealing with tires this large, so this will be really new experience. Cheers

Great job so far George! Such an iconic bike and rider pairing. Looks like a really nice kit, one which I would dearly like to get my hands on, but nothing available in SA. Following your build with interest George.
