John, sometimes I have been using the original color (like white here), but as you have white and metal there is a risk of bleed onto the metal when using white, so some (gloss) clear is the best option here I think.

Looking forward to see the masks coming off the nose!

After applying the coat and let it dry for more than two days, I painted the nose black. Unfortunately the result is far from perfect. With the paint still wet it looked fine, but once it started to dry, it also started to crack. Both coat and paint used are from Vallejo. Anyone experience with this effect, and how to solve it? I think the only option will be grinding and repainting.

Looks like an interaction between the different paints, my friend @johnb. Whatever the cause, you definitely need to sand and repaint. If I can see well from the pic, the paint hasn't cracked near the edges, where the demarcating tape is. If so, you might be able to carefully sand the rest (cracked) areas and repaint, so you will not have to ruin the already painted area underneath the tape, thus saving much effort. Though I have no experience with acrylics, before repainting, I would recommend a light coat of primer, so you will minimize the risk of re-cracking.

@fiveten, thanks, Spiros. This girl is really fighting me, although I still have the feeling I can win this fight. Applying a primer after sanding sounds like a very good idea, thanks for that.

Sadly some interaction between the clear and black. Strange as it is the same brand you used for both. Fingers crossed for the re-paint @johnb.

    John,

It's a smart paint scheme. I agree with Spiros, a little sanding and primer and you will be good to go. There's always a little pain to get some gain. Your well on your way to making a smart looking model.

This afternoon I had a look on the DC6 and the paint cracked even more.

Started to remove the black paint with water sanding.

And when all was removed I applied a layer of primer.

Will let it dry sufficiently before applying a new round of black paint.

Looks like good remedial work there, @johnb, fingers crossed the black will work this time.

"Normally", if the primer has remained uniform, the black will go on well over it, my friend @johnb.
So, fingers crossed! It is so annoying to have such mishaps at painting end stages.

@chinesegeorge, @fiveten, @airbum, thanks all, I cannot think of another reason why it should get cracked again.

What a drag John @johnb but it looks like that’s a good fix.
