    Louis,

I've been ghosting or creeping over your blog/posts. Life gets in the way and you don't have the time for modeling. However, seeing your work and progress is always a treat and helps rekindle my interests in the hobby. There is a modeler over at Britmodeler who has finished a ICM kit and has painted it along the lines of what your doing. This a impressive build and your photos and theme of teaching a modeler how to fish with a bigger net is appreciated. Everything is good to go.

Nice job on the masking, Louis (@lgardner). My head hurts just thinking about all of the masking, At least it isn't a 1/72 scale kit. Choosing the right color can be a real challenge. AK has colors called Midori Iro in both Real Colors and 3rd Gen paint. It is really interesting to see all of the paint chips in one place.

Thank you for the kind words. It seems like I tend to search for the most accurate color I can find on most occasions. I have some built models in my display cases that are not quite as they should be though. These were built before we had access to the internet, and there was not that much information available for us like what we have now. For me, the researching part is just as much fun as the actual building part.

Thanks again, and I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

    Take care.

I'm sure that most of the various paint manufacturing companies are close in appearance by nature, and also that some are not quite as accurate as others. Whatever colors you decide to use will be fine I have no doubts.

It sounds like the Mr. Color RLM 76 might actually be a better match, since they also have the closest match for the #21 "Dark Green" color. I don't have any of the Mr Paint RLM 76 to spray out or I would have. It would be interesting to see how their interpretation of JAAF #1 "Gray Green" would look like on a card. It could possibly be even a better choice than what I have picked out for mine.

Have you started building yours yet ?

You're welcome for the map to the mine field, I'm glad to help. So far it has been an easy walk in the park... (my famous last words).

Now to find some wood to knock on for good luck... 🙂

Merry Christmas to you and your family too my friend. I'm happy to report the masking is all done now, and I'm very happy with how this model is turning out so far. Please stay tuned as I have painted it ! It's now in overall Green Gray color using the RLM 76 color. Boy does it look good too I might add.

Hey there Erik ! Merry Christmas buddy ... It's good to hear from you.

Yes sir, you know how I am with digging into things. It's just as enjoyable for me as the building part is. Take care, and I plan on getting busy on the F-16(s) very soon. I'll keep you posted with updates on them.

Hey Stephen ! Merry Christmas ! It's really nice to see you stopping by here and posting on this build journal. I sincerely appreciate your kind words of wisdom, and it pleases me to know that my posts can be inspirational to some. That's really cool ! Thank you.

I always try to post useful info on my build journals, but there are some times when I'm simply too pressed for time to go into every little detail. We have been super busy lately with a home painting project that morphed into a major deal. Because of this my bench time has been limited.

That's OK though, because over the last two days we have had some wind and a lot of rain, so it was a no go for resuming the home repairs. I took full advantage of the bad weather and got some paint on Miss Sally tonight.

Please stand by as I post up the weekend's progress. And please keep on posting here, it's good to have you around.

I didn't know there was another builder posting his model because I usually only visit a few sites, with this one being the one I spend most of my time on. I did go take a look at it tonight, and he has done a great job with it. I especially like the home made stencils he used for the 14th Sentai. One day I hope to get a scan / cutting machine and a 3D printer. I think that these would be a game changer for me and open up a lot of doors.

    Thanks again and take care.

Hello again George. Merry Christmas my friend to you and your family. It's about a week away now and getting closer.

I learned something a few days ago about the WW2 Japanese colors. They were simply called out by a number, and not by a given name. This is why they have them listed as #21, #27, #29, #7, #1 and so on. The color's name / designation was added at a later time by others to help keep them straight when talking about which color was which.

Then apparently the Japanese language is much different from English in how they describe colors. Take the name as an example... and let's say it's a green. It's called Midori or something like that...then they call some colors bamboo and so on. It gets very confusing at times. I'm not sure exactly about the names I have used here, but you get the idea.

Yes these windows are finally masked, and I am very glad this wasn't a 1/72 scale kit ! Yes it is very cool to see a bunch of color chips for the same subject located all in one place... convenient too I should add.

I like how AK is releasing a bunch of new colors that were not available to us before. I have never tried any of their stuff though, but this makes it tempting to do so.

I have sprayed on the overall base coat of the Gray / Green.

Please stay tuned everyone, as I'll be posting it up next... 🙂

Here is the result of having a little bit of bench time available over this weekend.

All of these little windows were masked off... Surprisingly it wasn't too hard to do. The Yellow paint was carefully sanded off on the wings. I also added the antennae's on the fuselage spine and main canopy.

I tried to add the pitot tube, but it broke as I was cutting it off the plastic sprue. I glued it together and will install it soon... probably so I can break it again. You know that Murphy guy... and all of his laws.

I also took the time to carefully sand off the Yellow stripes that were present on the leading edge of both wings. This took some time, since I was trying to be extra careful and not accidentally obliterate the surface details.

Then I sprayed on a coat of US Navy Blue Gray over the canopy frames. I wanted it to look as if the canopy's actual interior framework was painted the same color as the rest of the aircraft interior was. So when you look into the canopy now, it should look as if the inside was indeed painted on.

Then it was time to spray on the RLM 76 using MRP-066 color. The entire airframe was given a good coat, but I didn't spend a whole lot of time making sure that everything on the upper surfaces was covered completely. This area will be sprayed using the Dark Green next, so there was no need to go overboard and load it up with a lot of excess paint here.

So I gave it just enough paint to give it a satisfactory base paint color, and nothing more.

I'm also VERY happy with the color choice I made for the overall base color. It is hard to show in these pictures, but it looks very similar to the color samples provided by Nick Millman for the Japanese Army color called JAAF #1 Hairyokushoku.

This is a close up of the color. It has what I think is the perfect blend of Green and Blue mixed into the color.

Now I'm excited to see how it will look with the Dark Green applied on top of it...

Things are really getting fun now !

As always, comments are encouraged. Thank you for stopping by and have a good night.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

Some very nice paintwork, Louis @lgardner
It looks very smooth and the color seems perfectly right.

I used some of the Mr Color 117 RLM76 on a Bf 109, and was very interested to see the greenish tint in the blue-grey. Millman is definitely onto the right color.

Nice clean work Louis (@lgardner). I always appreciate seeing crisp masking and paint work. It inspires me to get better at these tasks. This Sally should be quite impressive once fully painted amd marked up. The other thing that inspires me about your builds is the amount of research you put into the colors and markings. THis is something that I need to get a whole lot better at.

Paint looks very good, Louis (@lgardner). This looks like one of those grays that is so close to the color of the plastic that it is hard to see where you have painted. Looking forward to the next steps.
