Looks like the sun, moon and the stars are coming together to make for a primo build Louis. The construction, masking and painting look they came out of a book. Keep up the good work. ICM has done a real service for the community. I never believed that this subject would be done in this scale. Looking forward to see how you raise the bar in modeling.

Thank you John for the kind words. I am very pleased with the color choices on this one. The surface had some minor imperfections on it, simply because of my painting and not any faults of the kit. This evening I took a little time and sanded some of them out, plus I sprayed on a few coats of Future / Pledge or whatever it's being called now.

So please stay tuned for tonight's installment...and it's a big one too !

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

    Take care.

    Hey Tom,

I also have a 109 in the display case that I painted in overall RLM 76. It's hard to tell unless you see it in person, but in certain lighting, (and just like you said), this color does indeed have a bit of a greenish tint to it.

I think that Mr. Millman is spot on with his Japanese colors. When I saw his computer generated color chip, the light bulb went off when I realized just how close the Luftwaffe 76 color was to the Japanese Army #1 color. So I dragged out my home made color decks, and the rest was history. 🙂

When are you going to be building your Ki-21 ? Soon, I hope...

Take care and I hope to hear from you again soon,
    Merry Christmas.

Thank you for the compliments on my model. I'm not a huge fan of masking off canopies. There are many who do it much better than I do. It's hard to believe just how big this model is. It's a lot bigger than I originally expected it to be. Tonight I finished the camouflage painting, so please follow along as I post up the progress.

For me, doing the color research is just as much fun as the actual building is.

Thank you again, and may you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.

    Take care.

Hello again George ! It's great to hear from you.

This color is a little bit lighter than the actual plastic is. I found out today when I accidentally uncovered some of it as I was wet sanding down some of the paint pebbles I accidentally incorporated into my final painting passes.

Luckily I was able to blend it in so it's not noticeable now.

Please stay tuned, as I have a big update coming right up... I have painted the camouflage and added the decals.

It's getting really close now !

Merry Christmas to you and your family. Take care buddy... 🙂

Hey Stephen ! It's very nice to hear from you again, and I sincerely appreciate your compliments, especially those about the paint and masking.

Sometimes we work on a model that just seems to fight us, on every single little step of the way. This one however, was just the opposite. It seemed to be a "charmed" build, almost as if it "wanted" to get done with minimal fuss.

I guess I got lucky this time, unlike the time I was building my Brubaker Panther Jet as part of our Imodeler at the Movies group several years ago. That one fought me HARD ! It almost went into the trash can on several occasions. Thankfully I'm more stubborn and bone headed than most are, so I didn't (or couldn't) let it win.

I agree that ICM has done an amazing job for us. I never thought we would get such an amazing model in 1/48 scale of the Ki-21 Sally. I'm very thankful that we did !

Now if we could get a few more of the Japanese twin engine bombers in 1/48 scale. The first one on my list would be a G3M "Nell", followed by a Helen, and a Peggy. One can hope !

Please stay tuned my friend, as I post up tonight's progress.

I think you will enjoy it... 🙂

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

OK... Here is what happened today at the Gardner Iron Werke.

I took these photos yesterday afternoon, outside, and just as the sun was setting. Nothing was done to adjust the color. What you see here captured the Greenish tint of the color very nicely.

I decided I wanted to build a Ki-21 Sally from the 3rd Chutai of the 60th Sentai JAAF bomber unit. Their "Squadron" / Chutai identification color was Yellow. Since I wanted some Yellow on the plane, this is why I chose this particular example. Here you can see the tail was masked and painted, first using a White color for the base of the Yellow tail stripe.

The White striped encompassing the rear fuselage was also painted on. This stripe was often called a "Combat Stripe" and was found on most Japanese Army aircraft in a combat zone.

The kit supplies a red tail stripe for the 60th Sentai (Air Group) in decal form, should you wish to build a plane from the 2nd Second Chutai (Squadron) since Red was their identification color.

I illuminated the tail section with a small flashlight as this picture was taken. It wasn't the easiest things to do since I only have two hands... 🙂

This picture was taken just as soon as I finished spraying the Future Clear coat on. It's still very wet here and it looks like glass.

These two photos show how things looked after I removed the masking tape. There was a little bit of White overspray present on the fuselage. Luckily it buffed out and I didn't have to touch it up any. So far so good !

Then I gave the entire model several coats of Future / Pledge or whatever they call it now since it's not being produced anymore. Into this, I mixed in some Mr.Color Levelling Thinner. It helped the clear to flow out nice and smooth.

This shows how things looked once the Clear coat had dried. Nice and smooth, and not too shiny, perfect for the upcoming decals.

The decals were added next. They worked perfectly. The smaller ones had a tendency to stick onto the Future because it might not have dried enough. But they molded into the panel lines perfectly without the use of any decal solutions of any sort.

These pictures are close ups of the Hinomaru decals placed on the wings. They look as if they were painted on ! Outstanding...

This shows the plane as it looks when viewed from underneath. It's really starting to look the part now.

I was almost going to leave it as is, in a solid overall #1 Gray Green finish. I was that pleased with it...

But I just couldn't stop ! Here you can see how I started painting on the Dark Green paint using a random pattern. I didn't mask off anything. Instead, I simply painted around the markings, and this is likely how it was done on the real planes too.

In a little while, this is what the Sally looked like. I have camouflaged the upper surfaces now. The window frames were not painted using the Dark green. Instead they were left "as is" in the RLM 76 solid color.

Take a look at what different lighting does. This is the same plane, in a similar pose, using a different light source, and a different base. The background color can also affect how our eyes interpret a color.

These next photos demonstrate how it looks when it's outside. However, the pictures were not taken outside... it's a different form of lighting.

These last photos show how the colors looks on the underside.

It's getting closer to being completed now.

Once I add on some more small parts, unmask it and run the radio antennae, then do some minor weathering, this one will be done.

Man this has been a wonderful model to build...

As always, comments are encouraged. Thank you for stopping by and have a good night.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

@lgardner - I just got two "distractions" from Halberd yesterday and immediately dived into them - conversion kits for the Tamiya P-47s to make the XP-47H and the XP-72. But as soon as they are out of the way (probably over the weekend - doing them together) the Ki. 21 is on deck.

And your camo scheme looks super!

Wow, this is impressive, Louis @lgardner
The paintwork, especially the green mottling looks really good. I'm impressed that you had no overspray on the decals without masking them.
Also the way how those decals follow the surface is superb. Did you use any specific liquid to get this done so nicely.

    G’day Louis (@lgardner),
    Your camo is supurb.
It looks like you hired a couple of 1/48 scale men to paint an aircraft. 😊
I like that it is not uniform, with the squigle on the port wing and a few areas of heavier mottle.
After all, from 5 scale feet you wouldn’t see the camo as a whole and would likely have lapses of attention here and there.

I hope that you and yours have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

Looks terrific, Louis (@lgardner). The camo is pretty amazing, but it's a shame that most of the gray-green fuselage is covered with green. After all of the work you did getting the right color, now it is mostly hidden. How much did you dilute your paint and what pressure did you use to spray it on? Decals worked well. I have never sprayed Future before. Do you spray it full strength?

George has some good points on the gray-green on getting it "right". However, Louis you've taken the kit to the next level. Painting a kit with blotchy or random green spray patterned and making it look Japanese and not from some tagger on the street is an art form. You've channeled into some Japanese Zen. Added bonus this is a new release you could've stuck with the gray and held back but, you gambled the farm and won. So a Floridian native takes a Ukrainian kit and makes it look Japanese. Was there a full moon at the time when you painted? 😉 Your on a roll. Truth is stranger than fiction. But, it takes a little fiction to discover the truth while doing the adventure.
