    @fiveten- Spiros, thanks mate! Let’s see if I can keep that level on the rest of the kit eheh

    @johnb- thanks John!

    @lgardner- Louis thanks for the feedback mate! I had read about the similarity between the US Dark Sea Blue and the Japanese blue-black. I think I have that colour in a US navy dedicated Mr.Color paint set, one I bought several years ago for a never started Hellcat build…

    @tcinla- Thanks Tom! I read yesterday that Eduard will launch (QD3 or 4 2022) a Zero,Zero,Zero limited edition box that is supposed to offer a dozen or so colourful Zero liveries up to model 32.

    On the other hand, they also plan to release the Rufe floatplane by this summer, and this one will be a winner also for sure.

    @uscusn- hey Chuck! Thanks for the feedback mate. I do not have easy access to MM Paints here, but I’ll se if I can grab one of those Blue Black somewhere. The Ak acrylics are not the best or easiest paint to use in my experience, but many good modellers use them superbly, so that’s that.

    The cowl is now safe to handle after the flat coat, and some sparse weathering is all it needs. The plus side is that you can add the entire power egg section after you finish painting the remaining airframe entirely.

    One quick afterthought experience I wanted to share earlier but didn’t concerning the use of the small stencils/ IP decals in the box

    I’m sure everyone by now has read, heard or even tried to peel the carrier film of Eduard’s own decals included in all their post 2020 kits. I did it in my last Fock-Wulf 190 F-8 build without any issues and the result is a splendid rendition of painted insignia.

    However, while building the Zero cockpit I decided to use some of the decals Instrument dials for the side console, and read back at HS Brett Green build review of the kit where he peels the carrier prior while the sheet is still dry.

    This I did - the carrier film comes off easily alright- but when I dipped them in warm water for 10 seconds they began to shatter.

    So my warning is - don’t peel the carrier film before applying the desired decal to the surface!

    Allow the decal to completely dry and snuggle 100% to the surface detail and only then remove the film. This will work even in those tiny stencil decals.

    Pedro, @holzhamer
    Thanks for the tips with the decals. I will definitely keep this in mind when I start building my pair of Eduard Zero's.

    After a first use of AK RC303, the “amber grey” J3, I found it a bit too dark, and somewhat pistachio green too much.

    So following some advices, I went for a 60/40 cut with plain white.

    That took some of the green(ish) effect but still not quite right to my Mk.I eyeball rule.

    Yesterday I tested the same combination with a drop or two of “radome” colour from Gunze (H318) and this time I feel I have the best approximation to the Mitsubishi J3

    Still ongoing as you can see, some minor detail to be added so that the cockpit gets fully closed and the full paintwork can proceed

    @fiveten
    Thanks Spiros!
    Some WW2 IJAF or IJN colours are a real can of worms, so I just use my personal “feeling” about them. Don’t care if it’s 100% accurate or not even that close 😉
    But this one really got me thinking and testing for more than a week

    I find that "personal feeling" is usually the best approach, my friend @holzhamer!

    After having Lurked . . . an assembler would have gotten out the airbrush, primed and painted the kit from the bottle as if they where on the assembly line. An artist would consider light and shadow, give the illusion of depth, weight and mass. That "personal feeling" is the way to go. Some strong work Pedro.

    After Lurking and seeing, I picked up a Eduard sprue tree set of the Zero. For now in 1/48 scale, the Czech's are better at being Japanese (Zero) than the Japanese. The
    gauntlet has been thrown down. Lets see if Tamiya or Hasegawa can responds in kind. With out magnets.

    To me your personal feeling is giving it the perfect touch, Pedro @holzhamer
    The shading does indeed look perfect.
    Looking forward to the entire spray session result.
