Only if you are really focusing on the color difference, it's present.
Overall it looks just great, Tom.

@gblair: Turns out there are some other mistakes to be made by following the kit's instructions, mistakes easily spotted if one googles "photos of Miss Port Columbus at 1949 National Air Races" and comes up with the article by our renowned F2G expert, Rodney Williams, over at ARC. The wings are not clipped to where they were in 1949 by his explanation and photos he took at the time (should be clipped to the outer end of the ailerons for the 1949 configuration), or the exact placement of various decals on the aircraft - also obvious in the photos.

A further reminder to do ALL your research BEFORE cutting parts off the sprue. All that information above was literally found within a minute of asking Der Google the right question. I asked it too late because I just wanted to see if there was anything that showed what the exhaust stains looked like post-race - and I got that, which will make it look a bit more interesting. But not as accurate as it could have been. Lesson learned (this time).

Good reminder, Tom (@tcinla). Since I made the decision not to take models to contests anymore, I have favored a more relaxed view of prototypical accuracy. I do try to be reasonably accurate, and I usually do my due diligence before I start. But it always seems like I find out about something I could/should have corrected after the glue has dried on the area that needed some attention. And like your experience, it always seems like I find an inaccuracy when I am searching for something else on Google. I think your plane looks terrific, and would have never known about the wingtips if you had not told me.

@gblair - I too no longer go to contests, where this kind of attention to accuracy never matters anyway so long as the model is "nicely assembled." My point is, this kind of research was EASY. One minute, three photos, all you needed.

Here's the "post-race look." I'm sticking a fork in this one now and calling it done.

Paint and weathering look great, Tom (@tcinla). I would imagine these planes threw a lot of oil and smoke since they were operated at a high power setting. I love your custom blue color.
