I've been pretty busy the last several days and won't be able to do much today either, however, I was trying to clean up the seams on the horizontal and vertical stabilizers. This kit, being old suffers from aspects of fit and engineering that are less prevalent today, namely poorly fitting joints and seams in areas that are difficult to clean up. IN the process of cleaning a seam, I managed to snap off one of the vertical tail pieces (right after cleaning up its seams no less). So I will continue struggling with that for a while longer.

The turret is waiting for some supplies so I can finish the guns. It's painted but the upper dome is not attached yet. I don't have any more recent photos yet, so nothing new to share today other than my status. Happy New Year everyone and let's move into 2024 and see what we can accomplish this coming year.

Pity for the mishap, my friend @clipper! Will only require your extra time and effort, all will be excellent in the end.
    Happy New Year!

    Happy new year Carl.

Small steps are steps none the less, and all in all you are making good progress on this old bird.

Thanks Erik (@airbum), John (@johnb), and Spiros (@fiveten). Like George (@gblair), I am starting to want to move on to a new build. But I am determined to not have this end up on the Shelf of Doom so I will continue to plug away at it.

Hang in there, Carl (@clipper). This build has been a slow process, but you are getting close to the end.

Yep! Nothing new in this in that every build I have done in the last 30 to 40 years has take a fair amount of time to complete.

I'm working on the details now as I get closer to getting ready for painting. There are a few deviations from accuracy here. It wasn't necessarily intentional, but it worked out that way. The elevators have hinges showing on my model whereas the real aircraft does not. However, it looks better to me this way than the way they were previously mounted using the simple hinge points molded on the parts. So I am going to leave it this way.

The cowlings, being vacuformed from the original cowlings, are slightly bigger, even though I had reduced the diameter of the kit cowl I used for the master. The difference isn't real obvious except perhaps from the back. To reduce this , I've added some solder around the engine backs to represent the exhaust pipe. You can't see it in these pictures, but I will show that when I have painted the engines. I also had to come up with a system for mounting the aftermarket engines to the nacelles.

Other details I've started on (but no photos yet because they are not finished) are the navigation lights and IFF lights (green, red, amber) under the nose. I still need to fix up the flap tracks. Two of them are broken off and I am trying to decide if I want to make a bunch of these and replace them (not really thrilled with this idea, but who knows). I think that's all that remains before I can start masking and painting. I may make the antennas and install them before masking, but that is a risky venture.

Good decision to leave it that way, Carl @clipper
The cowlings do look good from here.
Looking forward to the paint session.

The cowlings look superb from here, my friend @clipper, as do the elevators, my friend @clipper!

Things are really coming together, Carl (@clipper). The new cowlings look very nice. I can tell you from my experience that the flap tracks are very easy to knock off. The tracks on my kits were separate and were constantly getting reattached. I think I would leave the antennas off until after painting. Between painting and decals, I think there would be 100% chance of knocking the antenna off.

Thanks for the kind words John (@johnb), Spiros (@fiveten), and George (@gblair). I have a bit of repair work to do on one cowling and the scoops still need to be added.

I've been experimenting to see how I might improve the flap track housings. Making a mold and casting duplicates is one option, but with this small of a part, it would be extremely wasteful to cast one track at a time and very inefficient and not worth the effort to make 5 mold plugs to cast five at a time. Or I could leave them as is and repair the two broken ones, however, they are not very well done. So I was looking for another option. It occurred to me that I might be able to use gravity to aid me here.

Using some .030 x .030 square cross section styrene, I cut off some pieces longer than I needed and dipped them in three different liquids. Black CA, Micro Krystal Clear (PVA glue), and Ammo Mig Ultra Glue. My thinking was that they would naturally form into a small tear drop shape on the plastic. I am trying to duplicate this part.

The Ultra Glue is too thick and didn't work at all, so I immediately rejected that. I might have been able to form it into shape, but they would have been inconsistent and at that size, difficult to manage.

The Black CA was tried next and the first effort yielded good results. Depending upon the angle of the part as it dries, this tear drop shape is slightly different. I tried a second one and held it at a different angle. The Micro Krystal Klear also seems to work, but it is harder to control the amount of glue on the part. It appears larger in this photo because of that. It might shrink a bit after it dries and be okay.

Once these are dried, I will snip them to length and glue them to the wing. Given the inherent fragility of such an arrangement, it will have to be done after painting and touched up. Should be possible to do that using an airbrush if I am very careful. I'll test one ahead of time to make sure they look okay on the wing, but I am hopeful.

What an excellent idea to use nature's gravity to form these parts, Carl @clipper
    They do look perfect.
