Thanksgiving festivities took up most of today, but I managed to get some work in on the Hudson landing gear. The struts are still long here. I will be trimming them to length as soon as I make the lower part of the strut and I can use it to get the overall size of the strut. I'm having to make compromises with the detail as this is so small and things don't always work out as planned.
For reference, the main strut and cross bar hinge is brass rod soldered together. The horizontal cross member was made by using a small section of plastic tube, drilled out to fit over the strut, then some bits of plastic card glued to it. I added bits of wire around the upper and lower parts of the ring to make it look more like the ones in the photos.
The lower fitting is a piece of aluminum tube . The diagonal strut going to it was glued first to the lower fitting triangles at an angle . This was then glued to the horizontal piece and the small triangles CA glued to the aluminum ring. Finally, two more small triangles were glued to both sides of the diagonal brace at the horizontal brace end.
There's another brace in there that I still need to figure out and there are the oleo scissors. To keep myself from going bananas, I am tackling each challenge a bit at a time and giving plenty of time for previous glue work to dry.
To simplify the mounting, I am using the same hinge point approach used by the original kit part, so this does require some compromises in the details. Just don't look too closely! 🙂
