Broke my hear. . .no, my leg

Some will say it was meant to be

But I broke the leg on the right main while fiddeling with the wing – forgot to think, and put pressure on it while it was on its feet. A small comfort was that it actually took quite a bit to break it. Well a few pictures of progress – the first ones with intact leg, the last with re-glued leg and the wing in place.

After white, most of the masks were taken off to be able to locate the wing.

The wing took quite e bit of cutting and filing and sanding to fit – a lot more than was to be expected from the paint, and so the pre-paint test-assembly have been sloppy!

Now, apart from the self-induced difficulties it starts to look like a C172.

Next time I shall see if the leg will hold, and perhaps having filled and sanded the wing/fuselage assy in preparation for one more round of red!

This is a most lovely build, @airbum!
    Looks a beautiful 172 now.
172 infection is slowly standardizing itself in my body...
Those Mescaleros near my office look gorgeous!
    Cannot wait for your progress.

Can't even tell that the gear is broken. That is always my biggest fear in planes with gear like this. Like most accidents such as this, in hindsight you ask yourself why you didn't see it coming. We have all been there and done that.

Thanks @fiveten. I still haven't seen the Italeri kit, but from pictures it look more detailed in the interior - but then again, you will just scratchbuild it 🙂
@gblair - yep, and we will do it again someday. I may have to build a build-jig one day?

    Back on its own legs

    and struts gets installed

As the repair has had time to cure it was back on the legs again. The struts got installed, and the back of the wing/cabin assembly got a first sanding and re-filling

With the filler left to cure, the plane got re-masked in preparation for a new round of red paint

I shall have to get it sanded and smooth above that rear window before paint, and so it may be a few weeks before next update here

Leave a comment – or start up your own Cessna 172 build for us to enjoy! 🙂

    Got a Jake, a vac Me-261, a 1/72 He-177, a 1/48 Vautour, a 1/32 Su-27 and a ...1/48 Draken to finish...
...so I'd better leave a comment:
I love how this is going, @airbum!
172s are just splendid looking and I cannot resist admiring them as they are modelled.
Waiting for your next painting session, but looks magnificent already!

    Just checking

With the colors almost done Aqiseeq is checking where to place the registration and such

Now, the QC here at HalfWorks failed to check the masking on the wing, and I’ll have to re-visit the leading edge. That is not such a big issue as I haven’t painted the struts yet.

Now I shall be looking forward to the decals – it is the type that s on a whole sheet and sensitive to chemicals, so that is a first for me.

Hope to get at least some decals and/or detailing done any day soon – thanks for stopping by

    Looks really amazing @airbum!
    Now it screams for decalling!

Paint looks great, Erik (@airbum). Planes with wing struts always add an extra step to get it painted the correct color. It sounds like you are talking about using decals that has a continuous sheet of clear holding all of the decals together. If it is, they really aren't that hard to use. Just trim as close as you can to the color portion of the decal. I sometimes make my own decals on our laser printer and they come out on a continuous sheet of clear. Some decals can be really sensitive to the chemicals like MicroSol etc, but there are some that are less strong. You might even try using water alone and see what happens, but experiment with a spare decal on some painted scrap plastic, just in case it doesn't work so well. Ask me how I know. :o)

    Thanks @fiveten.

@gblair, I have two names on the decal sheet, and will use the first name as it was the one I gave it, so I have the decals from the last to experiment with. The paint is really smooth on this one, so I will take your advise and just use water (it says on the instructions to use a drop of dishwashing soap). Thanks for the encouraging info!

Be sure to let us see the results of the experiment. I have tried using dishwashing soap, but ended up with a little residue under the decal that was impossible to clean up. I have heard of other people using it without problems. I always worry that when you get this far into a build that something will go wrong with the decals. Good luck.

Coming along nicely Erik, I sometimes use a drop or two of dishwashing liquid in my decal bath but I apply them to the model with Pledge and at times a bit of Mr mark softer to get them to settle !

    Mark my . . . . Cessna

I simply could not wait any longer

And so, before the final details got painted etc, I had to put on a few decals!

First, the extra name was used as a testobject on a piece of styrenecard

The decals come as mentioned with two names, the original as on my drawings, and the new one as the name I used had been used before on a helicopter.

    I’ll let the pictures speak:

I think the first two decals went rather well. @gblair and @kalamazoo, I only used de-mineralised water, and put on a few drops on the plane before transferring the decals. No dishwashing soap, and the paint was beautifully gloss to begin with! First the large one – like a dream! The second was the very long one-piece registration and harpoon (yep – the logostripe is a stylised Greenlandic harpoon). First try, it was a bit high, then I put a wet brush under it and moved it – that made the long line bend. A bit of extra water, and some careful moving supplied by pressing out excess water with a cotton swab, and there you are – no broken lines – except the ink gave up in a few places du to me bending the decal, but the backing is intact, full length.

As you may notice, the decal seems to fall into the rivets and so beautifully – I will try some decal sol or set on the spare in a few moments to see if it is mild enough not to solve the ink.

The rest will wait a day or two in order to be able to handle it without moving the ones already placed should I be careless enough to touch them.

Who knows – perhaps fully marked and gloss clear next time? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out
