    Thanks for the great idea, John (@johnb). Attaching the gear pods this way should minimize problems.

    It was now time to deal with the nose. The instructions would have you glue the nose on, then reach inside the prop ring to place the exhausts on each side. This seemed like a real easy way to lose a strip of exhausts in the fuselage. I decided to place the exhausts before I glued the nose on, while I still could reach the exhausts from the inside and outside, front and back of the nose. It seems like this is a one step forward, two steps back sort of kit. You go to take care of the next step in the kit, and realize that there are 3 other things you still need to do before you start the next step.

    @gblair, thanks, George.
    Your approach for the exhausts is indeed much safer this way. To be honest, I did mount the exhausts even before glueing the nose halves together. The approach shown in the manual is just asking for problems, like you said.
    Your progress looks great.

    Thanks, John (@johnb) and Spiros (@fiveten). It seems like there are several places in the instructions that are just asking for problems. I think that one of the great things about this "combo build" is that several different builders bring different skills and approaches to a given step, yet we seem to arrive at the end of the step with a sub-assembly that is amazingly similar to the others. But it is also interesting to see how many times we find a problem area and we all end up solving the problem in the same way. Very cool. :o)

    What kind of drink is that on your desk, the imprint looks interesting.

    Thank you Spiros and John

    @johnb - It is a totally new beer made by a local craft company - a homage to Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark, called Fear of the Hops - Double Hazy IPA.

    @inflames, sounds like a nice beer, Sebastijan
    Would love to try one. Well, not while modelling, fitting might suffer from it 🙂

    Your bench is way too clean, Sebastijan (@inflames). How do you find anything? Just kidding. Looking forward to seeing your build.

    @johnb I'd send a couple over but I guess the shipping cost could be prohibitive.

    @gblair haha It won't stay like that for long 😀

    So I started the build. My first ever Tamiya kit in almost 40 years of model making, can you believe it? And guess what? I got my mojo killed immediately. I was wondering what a strange shaped piece no.9 should be and to my horror I realized I have a short shot sprue. Another casualty is the cockpit fuel? tank but since it's deformed at the bottom, it won't be visible. But I am not sure what to do with the gunners back wall. I guess I'll have to sleep it over.

    Wow, sebastijan (@inflames). I have been building Tamiya kits for decades and have never seen a short-shot like this from Tamiya. I wonder if you could contact Tamiya and send pictures and see what they do. It won't help your build, but who knows. The first part is a fuel tank that sits behind the pilot and the bottom is invisible when it is put in place. The bigger problem is the misshaped bulkhead. It is flat and would be easy to replace, but you would need to get the correct size and shape. You might be able to fashion something using these drawings: https://drawingdatabase.com/ilyushin-il-2/

    It looks like this is the bulkhead that is aft of the fuel tank, near the gunner. It appears that about 2/3 of the bulkhead is there. You might still be able to use the piece and just add the missing part using thin styrene. I have attached some photos from the 1/32 Hobby Boss I found online. They might show you what you need. Sorry this has happened.

    Indeed, this is some misfortune, my friend @inflames! Never seen something like that in a Tamiya kit. Fabricating a bulkhead and repairing the tank might be an option...

    Thanks for sharing these AM builds, guys. I have two in the stash that I’ll get around to someday.

    It occurred to me that it might be more helpful if I could find a photo of the Tamiya part from your kit, Sebastijan (@inflames). This photo should be the part from your kit that is malformed. You might be able to Frankenstein a replacement using some styrene. Maybe cut away the bad stuff, splice in some plastic, then shape it. Good luck.
