@holzhamer, I went for greenish/stell gray as well, Pedro. The most commented color for this aircraft.
@adamcda13, you can compare those curves with the angle indicators some other dive bombers have on the side of the canopy, like a Henschell 129 for example.

Thanks everyone for your input also (@fiveten @gblair @johnb)

I had in my mind the notion that WW2 Soviet paints and primers is not a easy affair, since those first years of fight must have been pretty caothic when it came to planning and resources. Even so I know very little about this and was surprised to find those pics revealing a primer (that was not A-14) in the wheel bays. I’ll try to get a mix that can resemble it 😉

Good plan, Pedro (@holzhamer). I had the same problem when I was building mine. Everyone showed a different color in both the gear wells and the cockpit, especially when you are looking at restored aircraft. My plane was a post-war Yugoslavian plane, so I felt pretty good about using the A-14 from AK Real Colors.

    Paraphrasing Cole Porter's song...

    Anything (adequately researched) Goes!

...my friends @holzhamer, @gblair and @johnb. Color shades in models are at times a Mystical Experience, as is the case here. Good choice Pedro!

With such a nice weathering on the Il-2, I've decided to try and make a little base for it. Heavily inspired by Uncle Nightshift's work on Youtube I prepared an XPS base and used several different elements on it, from weathering pastes, dirt and rocks from the garden, to static grass and tufts. And in the end, I painted it all in black! 😀 Plan is, to paint everything over the weekend.

Spiros , I hope it will still be when I put some paint on it 😀

Black is cool, Sebastijan (@inflames). Maybe the plane landed and set the grass on fire.

A very nice base which will make the Il2 stand out even more, Sebastijan @inflames

I worked on the undercarriage yesterday, but I should have paid more attention to the instructions.

The pieces are moulded on duplicate sprues but the undercarriage is left and right handed.

So, Tamiya instructs that one of the two pins is cut off each of the forks.

I missed this subtlety and cut both pins off the first fork.

Fortunately, I saw this before I did the same to the second.

Luckily, I cut one of the pins off shorter than the other so I was able to glue the longer pin to the longer stub and recover the situation.

I've masked the canopy and sprayed the cockpit colour (A-14 Steel Grey).

The kit comes with 2 parts for an open cockpit canopy or a single piece for a closed canopy.

I've masked and temporarily fitted the latter and masked the others and I'll decide which to use later.

Tamiya provides the masks with printed outlines that the modeler has to cut out.

This was easier than I expected and they fit beautifully.

I checked the seams by also painting them - I needed a little more work in a couple of places.

The lower fuselage join that I was worried about is perfect.

Michael, it is always a great place to be when the exterior paimt gets started! The seam has indeed dissapeared.

    Superb paint work, Michael @michaelt
Indeed, the join is a smooth as can be.
