A little more progress on the Tamiya Il-2M3.

I cut the masks for the '2' using a Cricut machine.

The aircraft I'm modelling had its original tail markings - the slanted white fin tip group identifier and the individual 'White 2' aircraft number - over sprayed with what looks light a temporary white.

Only the tail was over sprayed on this and other group aircraft, so it wasn't a winter white-wash.

The '2' will be overpainted using a black decal from a Yak-1 sheet.

You can see on the second pic that realised that I had failed to sand smooth some decent scratches that I had left on the tailplane. It seems that the Gunze gloss coat allows these to be sanded where the Vellajo paints on their own just scratched off. Of course, the latter had also cured for longer.

The tooth-pick trick is something I learnt here on iModeler.

I am also building the Zvezda Il-2 single seater.

This is where I am up to with the cockpit.

It is also nicely detailed - OOB except for the addition of the generic after-market seat harness.

The kit gives two options for the instrument panel - either a flat panel with a decal or a panel with very nicely moulded instrument blanks (no dial detail) and switches for you to paint.

I chose a third option - the moulded panel and the decal.

The decal is a single piece - I cutting it into sections would have been slightly easier - that fits the moulded detail perfectly. Even the raised switches have matching white spots that align perfectly. Very impressive.

I don't know why the instructions don't suggest that combination.

The kit also provides a nicely detailed engine that I assembled and painted as per the instructions.

Of course, because I am closing all the engine panels, none of that will be seen again except for the forward filler cap on the oil reservoir (that I need to paint silver).

    The engine is needed for three reasons;

    1. the oil reservoir cap that pokes through a hole in the top engine panel

    2. to mount the exhausts

    3. to mount the prop

Unfortunately the positioning of the oil reservoir is uncharacteristically vague. So, I will wait until I am closing the fuselage up to glue it in and adjust it to fit the top engine panel.

Great progress AND a Zvezda surprise, my friend @michaelt! Both look superb and I am really curious to see how the Zvezda builds.
    Keep up the Good Work!

    G'day Spiros (@fiveten),
I'm sure I mentioned I was building it before, but these are the first photos I've taken.

Indeed, great progress on both, Michael @michaelt
The white on the tail of the Tamiya looks really nice, as well as the marking.
Interior on the Zvezda, cockpit and engine do progress nicely as well.

Yes you had, my friend @michaelt! Just me and my mind getting lost in all this excitement 🙂

Well, a bit more excitement for you, Spiros (@fiveten)!
I've placed the engine in the Zvezda and taken the bandages off the Tamiya.

    Really nice progress, Michael @michaelt
A pitty to hide this engine but at least you know it is there.

Very nice work, Michael (@michaelt). It certainly looks like you made the right choice on the instrument panel. It looks better than you could get with photoetch or 3D printed panels. The camo on the Tamiya really looks the part. Well done.

    I've added the decals now.

I used the kit decals for the stars, dive angle markings and prop stencils.

The tail star is perhaps a fraction too big and the white tail fin tip shows through the white portion.

One arm of the starboard fuselage star tore with on piece being a small speck but I managed to get it reassembled flawlessly.

The black 2 is half of a 28 from a SuperScale Yak-1/1B decal sheet.

The white outline for the 2 didn't really work as the stencil was only just bigger than the decal.
