Combo build: Ilyushin Il-2 Stormovik (Accurate Miniatures / Revell in 1/48 and Tamiya in 1/72)

    Michael Thank you! That's a Tupolev Tu-134UBL (Zvezda 1:144 kit). Basically a Tu-134 airliner with a Tu-22M3 nose, used for training Tu-22M3 bombardiers. There's several working consoles in the passenger section so they can train, I believe, up to 4 people at once.

    So, it has been a couple of months since I have touched the Zvezda single seater.

    Here I glued the fuselage halves together, hiding all that work on the engine!

    As is often the case, the engine interfered with the fit and this caused a stress crack in the nose. So, I had to file a little of the cylinder heads away in order to close it up.

    The seams were not good and I used super-glue to fill the upper and lower nose seams but the rear fuselage, being wood and therefore completely smooth on the real aircraft, was just (heavily) sanded smooth. This also removed the mid-fuselage join.

    Next I worked on the inner wing sections.

    The wing is in 7 parts, two upper, left and right, and three lower.

    It also has two three part spars.

    I deviated from the instructions and installed the two upper, inner wing surfaces first, mainly because these need a bit of manipulation to get into place and this would be hard had the bottom centre wing been installed first.

    The other reason is to allow me to more easily paint the bomb bays and main gear wells with the cell walls attached to the upper wing (to do).

    Fit issues are not what you are waiting for, but for sure your experience will tackle them.

    Thanks for the comments.
    Of course, fit issues are fixable, but don't you wish we didn't have to?
    There is a definite contrast with the Tamiya kit.

    Nice work, Michael (@michaelt). I have never build a Zvezda kit, but it certainly seems over-complicated. The Accurate Miniatures two-seater I built also seemed over-engineered in places. The kits I have built with full engines in them always seem to have fit issues. It looks like everything is coming together well.
