As to the decal disaster, you should have just painted around them, because then they were lightly oversprayed so they didn't stand out so much, no masking necessary.

For now, the decals have been taken completely off. I refuse to say “at least the rest came off easily.” I now know what a dog with the ‘cone of shame’ feels like.
