Lots of good progress, Jim @jimh. I always worry about using PE because it always seems to look great or horrible, with nothing in between.

@gblair absolutely. There is a balance. The cockpits, out of box, are gorgeous. The PE instrument panel and placards are worth the effort and a really nice addition, beyond that the kit is beautifully detailed. 99% of the paint work is done…tamiya tape sales are going to spike again 🙂 did my best to match the invasion stripes to wartime photos.

NMF and stripes look great, Jim (@jimh). I am just starting an Eduard Spitfire used on D-Day, so I will be joining you in the line for Tamiya Tape.

Paintwork is beautifully done, Jim @jimh
The stripes look amazing as do the various metal shades.

Got a lot done yesterday. Used the eduard decals for the first time and I love them. The varnish layer peeled right off…but…they have to be completely dry and bubble free. Also tried Abteilung oils for the first time. Really incredible how it gives the nmf a really cool patina. So far I’ve just used ‘smoke’…lots of other colors coming. While the decals were drying I started back in on the B. Got some paint on and started making the master for the canopy. Always wanted to do an open side window…gonna try pressure casting clear resin. Fingers crossed!

    Really good progress, Jum @jimh
The wash does indeed look very nice on the NMF.
Looking forward to clear resin, good luck.

The Abteilung oils are really amazing to work with. If you don’t like what’s happening…just wipe it off and start fresh. There is a learning curve, mostly not over doing it…but it’s been fun to learn this system. Got the B painted and just about ready for the clear coat and decals. Really enjoying these and not rushing them.

Both are very nice builds. Thanks for including the recommendation of the Abteilung oils and Mr. Color metal paints. I recently obtained the -B kit as well and I was wowed by the cockpit detail as well as the overall surface detail. Your wrap-up on both kits should serve as an inspiring endorsement of Eduard’s P-51 series.

P-51s are coming along great, Jim (@jimh). Your NMF looks really nice. I haven't tried Mr Color Metals yet, but I just got a selection that I hope to try soon. The more I use oils for weathering, the more I like them. I have been using some old artist oils that I used in an art class several years ago, but I am slowly replacing them with Abteilung oils. I am not sure why, but the Abteilung seems to work better.

Nice job @jimh, your metal finish is amazing. I'm currently doing the same, 1D version and 2 B/C versions. I'm following! By the way isn't the decals too transparents? I did a NMF a while ago and after setting the decals I could see the invasion stripes trough.

You created some very nice effects with those oils, Jim @jimh
