So, this showed up on the porch yesterday. I was able to finally go through it today.

Wonder of wonders! It includes TWO fuselages for the Spitfire Vb option, for the early windscreen and for the later. (Those are the center and right sprues in the shot of fuselage sprues.

Also, it contains two Aboukir filters. You can see them on the details sprue above the Vokes filter. I will be using the one on the left.

The wings are properly detailed for each version. I think this is the first time the lower cannon drum bulge on the Spitfire Vb has been done right. The Spitfire Vc wing includes two different cannon fairings. And of course this is the first time the Vc has been done in a 1/48 kit (only the airfix 1/72 Vc before).

Nope, I am not doing any of the markings options in the kit (though I will keep them for later Spitfire V models). But thanks to "Spitfire: Aces of the Empire", I have two very interesting options.

Buckled up for this one, looking forward to it... I think I will be doing Gentile's Vb, but there are a plethora of options to build. Just gotta finish up some ongoing builds first.

Gentile's is a good option, @pb_legend. Photos I have of the ES Spitfires, they're pretty clean - in the case of Gentile, they just got those airplanes 3 days before the handover after they lost 11 of 12 Spitfire IXs in the Morlain disaster.

Great entry, @tcinla! It is amazing how accurate the Eduard Spits are.

This is a nice looking combo kit, Tom @tcinla
Great to see that newer kits also are more accurate these days.
    Looking forward to your build.

Looking forward to this build, Tom (@tcinla). Not only do you get a lot of options, but you will have a bunch of plastic for the spares box when you are done.

Can’t wait to see the Vc built. They didn’t get me to bite on this boxing, I have plenty of Vb kits, built and unbuilt.

You haven't got a Vb as accurate as this kit, should that matter to you.

You'll have a paintshop busy in painting Spitfires, my friend @tcinla!
Good thing that you can do the camo with "eyes closed"!

Here is the model painted. I went with doing Caldwell’s third Spitfire Vc for two reasons: a) I have the markings on the great Spitfire: Aces of the Empire sheet, and b) there are several photos of it to assist.

Unlike the earlier Spitfire Vc’s that were delivered to Australia in desert markings, with the Mid Stone repainted with Foliage Green, leaving the RAF Dark Earth and Azure Blue, JL394 was one of the later ones that got a full repaint in Australian colors: Earth Brown, Foliage Green and Sky Blue. I went with Brett Green’s interpretation of the upper colors, for which I used Tamiya XF-79 “Linoleum Deck Brown” for the Earth Brown, lightened to imitate sun facing with some XF-72 “JGSDF Brown.” The Foliage Green was done with XF-26 “Deep Green”, with some XF-3 “Flat Green” to lighten for post-shading. The Sky Blue was mixed from eyeballing the color used for squadron codes on the Aeromaster sheet 48-667 “Aussie Spits Mk. V Part II”, for which I used XF-23 “Light Blue,” XF-21 “Sky” and XF-2 “Flat White” to get “close.”

Fortunately one of the shots of JL394 shows the leading edge of the wing, which had a much narrower area of white on the leading edge, which only extended as far out as the outer machine guns.

On to the decals – fortunately, repainted Aussie Spits didn’t have the stencils.

Finished. Decals on, flat finish applied, light weathering with oil stains on lower fuselage and exhaust stains, the grey is due to running a very lean mixture.
