    Messerschmitt Bf109 V14

Converting Tamiyas 109E to Udet’s 109 from the Zürich event

I know there has been a conversion kit for this one from Werners Wings, but it has been out of production for years, and so the possibility was to scale down as the plane is available in 1/72, or make my own conversion. Well, that was an easy choice to make. I got the build started in my 109 kindergarten some time ago, so please click on that to check.

Just to sum up, here you have a few pictures from there. First the wings need to be backdated by removing the covers for the wing MG FF.

The original decals has been re-issued by Draw Decals (thank you to @lgardner for sending me some)

A well know issue with the Tamiya kit is the tendency of the wing to “dig in” on assembly, so I always fashion a pair of stops to prevent them (saves a lot of filler and sanding)

And testassembly is needed a lot of times on a conversion like this. I think I shall stop for now to keep this short. The actual build has progressed just one step further so that will be for the next update

next up the intake and some cockpit work is shown

A lot of work completed already, Erik (@airbum). It is certainly helpful to have the background knowledge to guide you through the conversion. Looking forward to the rest of the build.

    Thank you gentlemen
@chinesegeorge, that makes two of us
    thanks @fiveten
@johnb a pleasure to have you onboard
@gblair, that is the advantage of having a kindergarden. A few recent books in the library gets you a long way.

    Intaking!

A short update on the intake, interior and other interests

The intake is more or less finished

And the holes for the exhausts has been filled to give way for some drilled out stubs.

The LqS in the fuselage has been sanded previously

And just to show the difference a un-modified airframe is in front

The trim-wheels were most often just half-round, and I took the time to file the loose wheel flat

And the axle was shortened. An unmodified one is shown for comparison

    next up some wingwork

You are a master of realistic superdetailing, my friend @airbum!
Yes, you pursue high standards for the poor rest of us 🙂 ...oh, my, I will never dare to model an 109 with an open canopy... 🙂
Jokes aside, i truly admire your work!

As in your other 109 builds, I think the primer will really tend to bring this build and its modification into one great-looking build, Erik (@airbum). Looking forward to the rest of the build.

@johnb and today another few hours spent sanding
@fiveten do open a 109 some day – it is fun!
@gblair, almost getting ready for first primer.

    Sanding!

Having covered the lower wing and rudders in LqS, I finally found time to sand today

Almost two months ago, I assembled the wings, using the fuselage to keep them in place.

After this the wings got some LqS, and then nothing for almost two months!

As you can imagine it was quite dry, so no problems there. I do not seem to have taken any pictures of the LqS’d parts this time, so here you have a dry assembly, just to see some progress.

Rudders got some too, and were liberated today.

I added another layer on the flaps where the MG FF’s were on later models in order to make them smooth

The aft edge was smoothened too

And this is it after some coarse sanding

As the plane will have a gloss finish it has to be a lot better than this.

next up – I hope it will be after some primer/sanding/primer/sanding. Stay tuned to find out!
