Millo, congratulations on this beautiful build. I also do not pre-shade as it looks artificial in my opinion. The filter technique is of course well known with figure painters, to achieve subtle shifts of colour, and as you have demonstrated, works on any subject (I used it on subjects as diverse as a Merkava IV LIC a few months ago, and, in a current WIP, a Ukranian farm cart!).
