Interior looks really good, David (@kahu). Finding the correct colors is always an adventure. When I am stuck for a color or need to know something about a plane, I have always found people on iModeler who know the answer. I just got the 1/32 Devastator, so it will nudge its way into my build queue at some point. Looking forward to the next steps.

A solid step mating the fuselage halves and an interesting finding regarding the IPs' alignment, my friend @kahu!

George Blair, yep this is a place to get help/ Blue=Gray vs Intermediate Blue comes to mind.

Spiros and John, yes this is a solid step towards completing the model.

Making progress. Painted the tail stripes and then masked it off to paint the Mission Models Blue-Gray. Painted the torpedo, still need to paint the plywood stabilization box wood grain.

Will mask and paint the undersides once I get the bombardier doors to sit properly while closed.

Looks like it is ready for the rest of the paint, David (@kahu). I have never had any luck with using decals for the red/white stripes on the tail, so I have been painting mine for a while. Yours will really look good when you peel off all of the tape.

Very nice approach which will look great after removing the masks, David @kahu

George @gblair, I have a Techmod decal sheet for the TBD but the shape of the Monogram rudder is slightly different. So a masking I went. And it was an adventure.

John @johnb and Spiros @fiveten; thanks.

It's been a while since I have logged in on Imodeler. You have certainly made some good progress with your TBD. I also mask off the red / white stripes on the rudder and paint them on. I have had too many troubles with decals not wrapping completely around the rear of a rudder. It is a pain to do, but it sure looks 100 times better than an ill fitting decal does... and chances are the decal will start to flake away along the edges as it ages. I had several kits I built as a kid that this happened too after being suspended from the ceiling in my old bedroom for a few years. Not cool.

Did you ever figure out your Blue Gray color questions ? Just before Model Master was discontinued, they did come out with a Blue Gray color in the enamel range. But I don't know how successful you will be with trying to find it now. I have had goo luck with using MRP colors. They are an acrylic lacquer, and they offer the Blue Gray color.

PS: That was cool to check out the website for the Yorktown at Midway. Thanks for posting it up. It was a bit eerie looking at the various weapons that were still pointing up towards the sky, and being able to look into the hangar bay from the outside was incredible as well.

Louis @lgardener I too have had decals flake away. Not fun.

Not tried lacquers yet though got one to try. Finding the Mission Models Blue-Grey enough of a challenge, without thinking will grab the fuselage instead of the masked of tail and immediately that area darkens. So paint again, one day will learn.

But managed to play with airbrush and mixing to try and better simulate fabric covered control surfaces. Hope it shows in picture.

Yes seeing Yorktown that way is haunting. As if it all just happened.

The fabric covered controls do look very nice this way, David @kahu
What kind of mixture did you use in the end.

I wish there was a secret or a science. Had some Blue-Grey leftover and decided to try something I had seen others do. So added some Ammo light gray and mixed. Shot that and it was too light. So added some more blue-grey and tried again. This time it seems to have gone darker after drying. But having the fabric over ribs the lighter color looks better to me.

I really like how you painted the aileron. It looks really good like that. On most of my built Corsairs that are painted with Blue Gray, I try to lighten the fabric a little bit more than the surrounding metal clad sections. In many photos of the originals from back in the day, you can see this is more often the normal than not. I don't know if these TBD's would have been as stark of a difference, because most were pulled from front line service shortly after Midway, and used as training planes in Stateside OTU's.

Did you see that Hobby Boss is now coming out with a 1/48 scale TBD ? It's available at Squadron as a pre order item. I don't know if I'll pull the trigger on one or not yet. I still have 4 of the original Monogram versions in ye olde stash to someday / hopefully build. Also I found some MRP Blue Gray available at Sprue Brothers if by chance you are still looking for something to use. I like how their paint sprays. It's ready to go right out of the bottle.

Keep it going my friend !

@lgardner - the HB kit will likely be a scaledown of the 1/32 Trumpeter kit. Given that there is 45 years of improvement in plastic molding, I would consider a scaledown of the 1/32 kit to be pretty superior to the Monogram kit.
