Koster Aero/Revell PB4Y-2 Vac Conversion

    Traded for this beauty (?) a few weeks ago, and thought I'd dive right into the nightmare. Seems it's the only 1/48 scale PB4Y-2 out there, so...
    It took a few hours to trim the vacu-formed part with a scribing hook and a #11 blade, but only half an hour to cut up the Revell B-24D donor fuselage. I must admit that act felt a little strange. I've never attempted a vac before, so this should be interesting, or a total disaster!

    The butchery continues.

    I've cut out the bays in the wings for the nacelles-two cuts each wing half. The inboard lower was the toughest and had to be attacked from three angles.

    Beginning to fit the components to the port wing.

    This is not going to be an easy build by any stretch of the imagination. Test fitting, until I get the hang of it with the flimsy vac parts, is iffy at best. Need to keep up the momentum or this may become a real albatross. I only quit when I get to feeling a bit ham handed and when I need to toddle off to work. Patience...

    Bryan, impressive work! Moving right along, too! While I don't see myself emulaing you on this airplane, I gotta admire your courage and ability. Look forward to seeing the finished job. I've become a NAVAIR guy lately.

    Just curious, is this model going to have the later glass nose or the bow turret? Seems odd that the D model would be the basis for the conversion seeing as how the later models already have the nose cut out for the turret.

    The Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston has been restoring a PB4Y-2 for as long as I can remember. It started out as a glass nosed firebomber and is being returned to its military configuration.

    Bryan, meant to ask, are the vac fuselage parts reinforced? I don't remember seeing one of Mr. Kosters complete kits, so I can't gauge the thickness of the plastic. Whatever you're doing, it looks to be working well. Yours is the second of these I've seen, the previous was at a regional, some years back. It was equally well done. The accompanying card mentioned it was quite a project. I thought that a masterpiece of understatement.
