@fiveten and @gblair, thank you for the comments gents - they will be taken into consideration.

Erik, give the model some very fine, smooth even, sand polish. Looking at the photos it looks like you need to dilute a bit more the paint to avoid that orange peeling effect. Been there so...

Thank you for that info @holzhamer. Indeed the paint needs to be thinner, and will try to do that next time around. I do that a lot, så have to make a memo to myself on the wall in the paintshop.

    Spotting a 109

With the masking re-arranged, it is ready for mottle

Having masked both Mölders and the Italian 109 gives a bit longer time in the booth. I had some issues yesterday when painting my Spittschmitt yellow, and so there may be a swab with thinner at hand.

The Mölders version only needs light mottling, and I think it may be painted first.

Will it be total disaster? – stay tuned

    Paint drying

With the mottling done, this 109 is headed for the corner to dry out

I will have to let it dry completely before I decide if it will need to have a layer of clear or if the decals can be added on the clear paint. For now, here is the result of todays mottling session

I have to say that I am rather satisfied, but open to suggestions and comments.

Oh well, I just remembered that I have the propeller and spinner ready – they are added (loose fit) to add just a bit more interest to this post

    That is it for now

Decals or details next – stay tuned

Thank you @fiveten - I think my bluegrey is far to blue, but that may change in the sunlight with a layer of matte and decals. I hav an issue with the airbrust (infinity, double-action) when i had the paintactivator drawn fully back and loosened the amount by moving the handle forward, there actually came more paint, not less. Any ideas? - I suspect I may need a new set of seals, or perhaps just a thorough clean and tighten up?

Sounds like something solidified is "in-there", possibly at the nozzle area, my friend @airbum. Anyways, first action is complete dissasembly, thourough cleaning, seals checking (just in case) and put back together. If nogo, then you can start digging deeper.

Thanx @fiveten - I will do a complete rub-and-scrub on it before the next session.

I love the 109s with the distinct yellow on the nose. Really makes them stand out. Mottle looks great. I always vote for a disassemble and clean before I get into something more exhaustive with my airbrush. I'm still using a single action airbrush I got almost 40 years ago, and all it ever needs is an occasional deep clean and new seals. Good luck.

@gblair, just gave the airbrush a good soak and clean - even though I did think it looked OK, the nooks and crannies were packed as it turned out. At least the thinner did recieve a color after I had done with it. I think it may be a few days before I get to try it though.

    Another post comin' up here;

    Decals!

With the major painting done, it is time for decals

And today I got some help from my girlfriend. It was the first time she had her hands on decals, and it went rather well.

Pushing the decal around with the knife!

Well, it was only major items today, and just a few pictures to show progress (the garden also needed attention, and I hope to get a few passes with the airbrush after supper.

    Two without flash

    • and two with flash

All with the small Olympus Tough – really like that camera, as it is always at hand on the bench.

Now, next time it may be all stencils on, and a coat of Matt Clear – stay tuned

@airbum- Moelders F-1 looks very good from here! One trick I started using lately with decals is getting a fine toothpick to get them in the recess lines even more. That allows me to weathered them in an much easier way than before, since washes flow much more precisely in the lines. Hope to see this one complete soon, it is my favourite of all your 109 production line,

You mentioned using an H&S Infinity airbrush? I just purchased one a few days ago because my old and trustworthy H&S Evolution just isn’t working properly anymore, and I tried all the tricks in the book to get it working properly again including as a last resort replacing almost all caps, noozle and needle but to no avail. Am pretty excited with the new airbrush obviously (just like kids with new toys ahah) but am still to use it where the evolution excelled, mottling and fine lines.

Looks great, Erik. Hang on to your girl friend, since trained assistants are hard to find. Decals came out well. I was reading a technique yesterday for decals that I had never heard of before. They have you brush full-strength white glue (like Elmers) directly on the model, then place the wet decal on top of it. You smooth it out and then use the MicroSol and MicroSet as usual. The author says he never has problems with decals silvering. Has anyone tried this technique before? I suspect I will try it on some scrap plastic with some spare decals before I commit to to use it on one of my children (plastic models).

    Decals look excellent, @airbum!
    Kudos to your great assistant!
George @gblair, this technique looks very interesting. Should white glue be applied directly, even at a matt surface?
