Excellent progress, my friend @kahu! An excellent kit that has its idiosyncrasies!

Coming along nicely, David @kahu. I am a big fan of positive alignment of parts rather than butt-joints in a sea of flat plastic.

Thanks for the appreciated words of encouragement. Everything fits together with no drama except me being fumble fingered with delicate parts but that is par for the course. Filled in that gap where the center rack is. Had a couple other spots needing filler because I had been a bit too aggressive on removing sprue gates but again nothing like a grand canyon.

Now gluing the wings together. First glue the ailerons on each side followed by the corresponding flap. Using gentle pressure was able to glue without fuss. So far so good so cross fingers.

Decided to try something different since MiniArt provides the cowling in four parts. I masked off the front portion of the parts making sure the tape aligned properly. Then shot Tamiya flat white to act as base. Followed about 12 hours later with Model Master enamel Insignia Red. This made masking a bit easier to do, just hope it stays painless. Did the same paint process on the rudder's two parts.

Decals from the Tamiya P-47M have been graciously sent to me by Louis @lgardner for red nose Thunderbolts of the 56th FG.

Just follow my review on putting the cowling together around the engine, David. Also re-examine what you painted red. It's not just the cowling front end. The red is back 24 inches on 56th FG P-47s. It may be looking at the cowling in pieces, but it doesn't look extended back far enough.

The red looks perfect, David @kahu
Pretty sure you will get it aligned nicely.

I always seem to get a misshapen cowling when it comes in multiple pieces, David @kahu. It looks like you are well on your way to cowling that will fit well. Undercoating with white will really help the red stand out.

Tom @tcinla. I am planning to follow your way of assembling the cowling. I probably should take a picture of the cowling panels with masking removed, used Tamiya's instructions as a guide to place the masking.

But now I have fallen into a serious rabbit hole. What color did they use to paint the top of 61st FS planes? RAF Night? Or another black? In fact what colors the 56th FG used overall is making my eyes go cross. The bare metal leading edges and undersides are already making me nervous, guess Vallejo White Aluminum will suffice.

Thanks @fiveten, @johnb, and @gblair. Let me keep plugging along.

Interpretation of the colors on old photos can be difficult, David (@kahu). Old black and white is really hard, but even old color photos can be deceptive. Sometimes you can find descriptions of the colors, but you really have to search for them. I am sure the plane will look great with whatever choice of colors you make.

Went with Tamiya NATO Black. Cowling panels painted. Since had airbrush loaded sprayed to find seam issues. Fewer than I thought. Successfully fixed that gap at bomb rack, wing roots is main area to fix but just a little.

I’m happy to hear that the decals are going to good use. This one looks great already and it will only get better from here.

I like how you have been painting it.

As far as the actual colors that were used you’re likely going to have to dive deeper into the rabbit hole to try and figure that one out.

I have seen several original wartime era color photos that show some of the Thunderbolts from this unit were painted in various Blues and had some Lighter colors that were sprayed on them as well. Plus they had some bare metal places as well.

But like George says these old pictures tend to shift as they age, so it’s not going to be an easy process for you.

I’m curious to see what you decide to use. It’s going to be wonderful and you’ll have some fun doing it. That’s what matters.

    Keep it going.

As to 61st FS P-47Ms - Some were black, some a very very dark blue/black. and some were a dark "plum" color. As to which ones were what, the only one identified with a particular pilot is Mike Gladych;s "Pengie V", which was the very dark plum color according to his crew chief who made him a model and painted it with the paint used on the airplane.

No! NATO black is too gray! Wrongwrongwrong!
