@gblair, George, very interesting reading about these masks, looks like you’ve got the hang of them anyhow. Looking forward to seeing the transfers going on.

Thanks, John (@j-healy) and (George @chinesegeorge). This was my first use of the masks, and there is a learning curve that goes along with them. I'm not sure, but I think the Montex masks are made from a different vinyl. I may try them next.

John, I saw in Headlines that you built a really nice Hurricane IID. It is on my shortlist to build after reading a really good article on the IIDs exploits tank-busting in North Africa. I have the same kit you used, but I am figuring out if I can convert a Hasegawa Hurricane.

I finally got the clear gloss sprayed on the plane, and it is resting overnight. Just as I was setting up to spray the gloss, a huge storm hit. We haven't had any measurable rain in 60 days, and then we got 4 inches in an hour. I live on a hill, but other portions of the town flooded. The power also failed during the storm. A couple of hours later, I was able to spray the gloss, but just as I was finishing, my 40 year old compressor decided it was time to go to compressor heaven. I have another compressor I use in the garage that will fill in until I resolve my hobby compressor problem. I have photos, but I couldn't get them to import. I will post them after I figure out why they won't import.

@gblair, Don't know what the average age of compressors is, but 40 years of hard labour sounds acceptable.
Hopefully you can get it back alive soon.

I love summer storms, as long as they do not cause any kind of damage, my friend @gblair, so, it is a pity that some parts of your town experienced flooding. Hope to fix/replace your hobby compressor soon! Looking forward to your pics!

Thanks, John (@johnb) and Spiros (@fiveten). I am on the way upstairs to add the decals. I still can't post photos. I tried logging out and back into iModeler, changing the photo type from .jpg to .png, and tried accessing iModeler on both Firefox and Microsoft Edge. No luck getting the photos to go in. I get an error message on each photo that just says "Error". I will try some more later.

I'm kinda late to this party. I don't know how I missed this build but, so far, wow! Like you, I am quite fond of building up the older kits such as those offered by Monogram, Revell, and even Aurora. Sure, I build the "shake-n bake" kits from "Tamiyagawa" from time to time, but nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a good old Monogram kit. I am currently in the finishing stages of a Monogram Typhoon that I have been chipping away at as a side project between more major projects. I see that you and I have similar approaches and techniques when it comes to making a silk purse from a sow's ear. Some of your techniques had me kicking myself in the arse saying "Why didn't I think of that". I also see that you ran into the same flaws and problems that are inherent with this particular kit and yet overcame them. Your techniques for fading paint are also very similar to mine, though somewhat reversed. I love those AML paint masks for camouflage. I also like Montex masks for markings. The Montex masks can be a bit fiddley but far less troublesome as decaling and the results are far more convincing. I will be following this build. Take your time and have fun. Slainte.

Thanks, Seamus (@seamus1). I think we are of the same mind when it comes to these classic kits. This has been a fun build and I hope to post some more photos as soon as I figure out why they won't load now. I haven't tried Montex masks before, but they are on the list of things to do. I don't really worry too much about the challenges presented in these kits. As we used to say in the Air Force, "they aren't problems, just another chance to excel." :o) I always retreat to my hobby room, put on some quiet Celtic music (which keeps me calm and focused), and then I plow ahead on the next part of the build. My constant search for something "just a little bit different" seems to always take me down a rabbit hole. Cheers.

    George, @gblair
These old Monogram kits still look good to me, (as do the older Revell kits), and what you are doing here with this Typhoon is making it even better.

Speaking of the older 1/32 scale Revell kits, earlier today I was looking at my P-51B. It seems I'll have a few Mustang parts left over from the pair I currently have underway. A few years back, I picked up a set of decals for it, to build up Gentile's "Shangri-La". I wanted to make it as the original offering was from the late 60's / early 70's. I'm going to keep some of your scratch building ideas in mind when I finally do get around to building this one.

First I have to clear out a few more kits that have already been started before I start the next razor back Mustang.

Your comments from your time in the Air Force brought a smile. We had similar sayings in the Army. You know the deal. Hopefully you can get the picture posting thing squared away soon. I always look forward to seeing your latest updates. It's become a part of my daily routine now.

    Take care.

Thanks, Louis (@lgardner). I appreciate your kind words. I hope to be able to post photos soon. Still no idea why it isn't working. I got the decals on the plane yesterday and hope to get some clear flat sprayed today. I have at least 2 of the old P-51Bs floating around the storage room, and I hope to do a similar upgrade to at least one of them. I also found a 1/48 Monogram on consignment at my local hobby store for $30, so I snatched it up. I hope you are following the doctor's orders for your rehab/recovery. You reach a point where you start feeling better and start doing things you aren't supposed to. Cheers.

This is really turning into an excellent build! The extra work has really paid off for you and made vintage look new. The paint scheme looks great! The markings are really going to dress it up nicely! @gblair.

Thanks, Spiros (@fiveten) and Walt (@luftwaffe-birdman). I got the painting done, followed by the decals and a layer of clear flat. I still can't upload photos since the server migration, but I am trying to see if there is anything I can do here to work around the problem.

Well, I managed to successfully import 2 pictures that I took today, but the pictures I took yesterday will still not import. I don't know why, but I am glad these two made it.

Since the last post: I painted the camouflage, added a layer of clear gloss, and then added the decals. The decals were very shiny, and fairly thick, but they responded well to MicroSet/MicroSol. I gave the decals 24 hours to dry, and then I sealed everything with a layer of Tamiya Clear Flat. I will let this layer dry for another 24 hours while I think about the weathering. Time to visit the few photos I have of these planes and plan the next step.

The markings on these reconnaissance Typhoons are interesting. The basic camouflage and markings are essentially the same as other Typhoons. I found a thread on one of the British sites that had very specific information about these planes that was obtained from a former RAF officer who was in the squadron that used these planes. He had a fairly complete list of the letter identifiers and registration numbers for most of the FR Typhoons in the squadron. Unlike other Typhoons, the recon aircraft used single letter identifiers. Some of the registration codes listed for these aircraft begin with "JP", which is what I used for this model. To be honest, I could have pieced together an exact registration from the list that matched the aircraft with the letter "A" identifier, but laziness got me and I settled for having a registration that began with "JP", which is good enough for my needs. Cheers.
