I failed to mention that I intend to build my Monogram P-40B as an AVG mount. As far as I'm concerned, a P-40 without a shark mouth is like a camel without a hump. In doing some research, I found that the AVG P-40's were originally purchased by the British and built with some British specs. One of the specs was a square backed seat with only lap belts (must have made for one hell of a ride). Somehow, Chennault got a hold of these P-40s. So I think I have to come up with a square backed seat and some lap belts for my P-40.

Nice work, Seamus (@seamus1). That is some really nice scratchbuilding work. A little paint and weathering, and it will be the perfect centerpiece for the cockpit.

Holy Cats Seamus (@seamus1). Very fine scratchbuilding on that seat. You must still be blessed with steady hands and decent eyesight!

A bit of progress on the Monogram P-40B. Fleshed out the side walls with some plastic bits, wire, and left over photo etch. I kept it simple. As I stated, I'm not going for 100% accuracy, just reasonable accuracy. Loosely dry fit the cockpit parts to the fuselage just to see if everything clears. So far I'm happy with it.

This is outstanding Seamus (@seamus1). There's something about the Monogram P-40B kit that just screams for adding this extra detail. Something more than simply not having much detail in the first place. I think it might be the brown plastic and the very good outline that Monogram achieved with this kit (and despite being a very poor fitting kit). I remember deliberately challenging myself to tackle this in 2002. One of my favorite builds still.

In my personal opinion, despite soft, inaccurate, and/or lack of detail the Monogram P-40B is the best 1/48 P-40B kit to this day. Her measurements are spot on. As far as poor fit, I always try to work with early release Monogram kits manufactured in Morton Grove IL. They fit together pretty darn good. Best of all, they can be had for cheap.

Not to be nit picky, but Monogram really "screwed the pooch" on these P-40B exhausts. They're oversized, terribly shaped, and difficult to clean. Even if you do clean them up, they still would look like c**p. To compound matters, they cannot be left off until the very end of assembly. They must be fitted into the fuselage early into the assembly, which would make them difficult to work around. Time for more creative gizmology me thinks.

This is an elegant solution to the exhausts on this kit. I think I did something similar when I did mine. I didn't have access to different kit exhausts at the time, but those great Moskit metal exhausts were available back then. I used those and put in sheet styrene on the inside to get a similar result. Nice fix Seamus (@seamus1)

This is really impressive scratch building on the interior, Seamus @seamus1
Knobs as small as a drop of CA is amazing.
