Great work on both Ponies Erik @airbum
I got my dual p-51 build on the doldrums, stoped almost at the stage of your last pic, so I’ll keep an eye on your progress to check the path ahead 😉

I totally missed the P-51D build, Erik (@airbum). Really nice. Eduard kits really work up into a great model.

Erik, awesome builds and very educational on the bubble and fastback! I am learning many new things about both types, thank you!

Not 3, but 10 months passed before this one got revisited @johnb, @fiveten, @holzhamer, @mvtb, @gblair and @adrianstarling, so here you have another small progress.

    Filler and tissue

    Masking time

But first it got some attention with a sandingstick, and the wheelassembly got under way

The nose needed some filler – luckily it has to be painted, but the fuselage and other parts need to be polished alu! That will be a first for me.

The windscreen did get the kit masks, but other parts were masked by yellow tape and a circular cutter

And other parts were masked by way of wet tissue paper – another first for me, but not the last time this method will be used, I think – de-masking will be the judge!

Hopefully the speed on this build will increase a bit – stay tuned!

    @airbum
Wow, that’s a looong time due update Erik!
Funny coincidence you restarted your Eduard Pony since me nas Louis have talked about getting ours also on the move this year. My X2 kit lingers half made within the box, but now I bought a weekend D-20 just to use the pilot I got from you 😉 so it Willie a three part build when I got them going.

I am not confident using paper damped as mask, exauste I fear it may blend with the paint inside, namely if its acrylic. Hope yours works fine obviously. Looking forward for some updates soon

Looks great, Erik (@airbum). I have used the wet tissue (I use paper towels from the kitchen) many times without problems. I am mid-way through a move to a new house, so I have been out of pocket for a while.

BTW - the P-51C is the old ICM kit, which is a close-enough knock-off of the Tamiya kit that the main parts are interchangeable.

    Great progress, Erik @airbum
Looks like a very nice circular cutter you have.

Thank you gents - looking forward to the builds by Pedro and Louis. I did not think about any issue with tissue (sorry) and water contra acrylics. I have the wheelwells painted mostly with Valejo. . . - time will tell. The circular cutter was rather expensive, but works well indeed (too bad all the circular cutters I've come across were with chinese parts - I have always tried to buy as local as possible)

As for the comment on the P-51C it is mentioned in the first sentences in this build actually.

The chosen kit was a P51 C Mustang Mk III from Revell... It turned out to be a bad choice as it was a reboxed ICM that lacked the quality they make today.

    Flappin’

As this one is for my better half, she has the final word on how it will be displayed

And she wants the flaps set at take-off, ready to go. Eduard only leaves the option of full flaps on this kit, so surgery is needed.

Those huge barn-doors does ruin the nice clean shape a bit – right?

Eduard has made sure the thickness looks just right against the wingskin (Huge progress compared to the 109’s), and some modification will take place.

As the flaps are hinged to rotate into the wing there will now be a gap at the lower edge. A strip of 0,5x0,75mm evergreen takes care of that (after sanding the edge on the flap flat)

    And the result

Makes the wing a bit “cleaner” IMHO.

next up I really do hope to get it primed, but that will not be today as the flappin’ work has to be finished properly first

The flaps in that position do add some more realism, Erik @airbum
Great to see how you achieved that in the best possible way.
