I sprayed Vallejo 77.713 Jet Exhaust on the Titanium panels behind the engine and lightly on the Titanium stabilisers underside.

I then emphasised the panel bands with fine streaks of a mix of Vallejo 76.518 Black and 76.513 Brown wash as well as touching up the rear underfuselage and side panels.

I also added some staining aft of the underside vents and underwing air brakes.

I’ll leave it there because I don’t want to over do things. These jets were brand new and operated for three years before they were given back to the US.

I’ll add another clear coat and start on all the decals.

And I think I need to fix that rough bit of Titanium on the trailing edge of the port stabiliser.

    Looks wonderful, Michael @michaelt
Also the various shades do add a lot of realism.

Nice work Michael (@michaelt). The exhaust area of the Phantom is such an obvious part of the aircraft. It looks good here. I agree with your decision on weathering. I am still struggling on how far to go with this.

I’ve laid down 81 decals so far and all I have done are the stencils behind the fuselage red band, the national insignia and the serial number.

As I feared, the white of the national insignia was translucent. So, it was just as well I masked and sprayed the white discs (perfect size, by the way) to fix this.

To prevent losing the decals due to handling while laying down the rest of the decals, I’ve sprayed them with a clear gloss.

I also sprayed the black on the upper surface of the stabilisers. These seemed to have some sort of black protective coating on the Australian jets , but only on the top surface. I have a picture in a book showing this peeling off on one aircraft, so it looks more like a thin film rather than paint. It also looks to be slightly translucent in som photos.

I used SMS PL23 Clear Black, which actually has indigo overtones. I may have sprayed one coat to many as it has lost most of the translucent look, but I like the effect. It looks black in a different way to the black radome, for example.

Great job so far and I too like the distinctive black shade, my friend @michaelt!

Very nice Michael (@michaelt). When you get the flat coat on this model, I think that entire camo / black / metal combination is going to look very cool.

The black does look very nice, Michael @michaelt
A wise decision to protect the already applied stencils.

363 decals down and still the underside to do. About 300 of them have silvered…

Silvering of stencils is always a pain. Have you verified if a gloss coat over them helps with this or not?

Regardless, the paintwork on the Phantom is top notch, Michael (@michaelt).

A pity about the silvering, Michael @michaelt
Hopefully a clear coat will help to reduce it.

I glossed over them and applied the matt coat - that is when they became more apparent.

Looks great, Michael (@michaelt). Decals are always a scary time for me. So many things can go wrong with the decals, and these problems always pop up at the very end of the build. I have had decals silver even when they are applied to a shiny surface, but I don't think your silvering will be noticeable when you are done.
