Hi Rob, there's a lot going on here already, it'll be interesting to watch the full story unfold as you progress. Your tree building technique reminds me of some of my old railway modelling friends' methods, only they started with some ex-BT telephone cable, letting it form the trunk and covering it with PVA glue like you, then gradually unravelling it to make the branches, twigs, etc. It's amazing just how big an old oak tree is, particularly in 1/32 or 1/35 scale.

Always wondered where builders started on a diorama once they have theme in mind. Were the pieces we are looking at intended for this when built & is the base behind the casualty for this?

Rob I will be following your build with great interest. I hope you'll tell us what your inspiration was, and how you visualized what was needed to do to give it form.

    Hi Al,

The tree trunk is about fist-size in diameter. I had it in mind to use, but also had too many ideas to start with and had to decide which 'theme' should dominate, and went with the mighty oak in the end. I had also decided at the start to use a crashed/damaged aircraft but also had to decide on which of several ways to present it. The original idea for the dio was HUGE and so I had too reign it in a bit for practicality's sake ( in an earlier incarnation the oak was just a background item...).

Anyway, it's a real task to get the oak looking right so I plan on spending some time on it. Most other items are linked to standard kit-building and figure painting techniques, but as with most things like this, there will be adjustments made as the project progresses.

Have just noticed that when I reply to an individual under their comment, that my reply appears separately and not beneath the original comment. Not sure why that is, as it doesn't appear that way under Headlines comment/responses.

    Thanks, Rick.

As I mentioned in response Al, my problem is that initially the concept interferes with the practicality, in that there were too many ideas fighting for space. I pondered the direction I wanted to take for a couple of weeks, dismissing certain choices and settling gradually on two or three key points for the diorama.

From the start, the idea was Russian-themed. As well as the aircraft and tree, I also needed a military element, which is in the form of (1) a Stalinetz tractor and (2) an anti-aircraft unit. There is also a civilian element in the form of refugees. Beyond that, there are certain symbolic additions which give 'pause for thought' - in this case a roadside shrine surrounded by barbed wire and a soldier comforting a refugee child. Further enhancements will be added to give personality to still finer points of detail.

    Hi George.

Yes the tree, as befitting a key component in the composition, is big. The height, without foliage, is about 45 cm and the trunk is nearly 40 cm in circumference, but then it would have to be a good size to play its part with the 109.

I've just brushed on Evo Stick wood adhesive all over to seal and set the previous work. In the meantime also bringing forward the figures and other landscape items.

    Thanks for looking in.

Very interesting Rob. I'm looking forward to seeing this dio progress. Trees are something i've wondered about adding but wasn't sure about how to go about it. Good luck with this one.

Thanks Gregor. I've now sprayed the tree with grey acrylic primer which pulls everything together, old and new. The work up to now is messy and somewhat tedious, but now opens up to something of more finesse, with colours and textures.

Rob in regards to a reply placement to a specific question in the Group sections I ask that same question & was told that was the way the program was written. Re-writing the program would be the only solution that I can see & I don't see that happening. Like your doing I try to use the person's name who ask the question.

Cheers, Al. Thought it was just me. Odd though that Groups and Headlines don't follow the same code. Anyway, I'm sure we'll manage.

Thanks Rob, I think I get it your thought process. Looking forward to seeing it come together.

I think you can direct personal messages from within a reply by using the "@ABCDE" address that follows our names eg for you "@robbo", mine is "@fuzzmann". Not sure of the actual mechanics but it generates a private message with the text that follows it in the reply. Martin used it when making replays on his D520 build
