1/72 Airfix Short Sunderland

August 2, 2013 · in Aviation · · 3 · 3.4K

This was another old kit that I decided to "experiment" on. Since I already had a 2nd kit to build "stock", I thought I'd back date this to an earlier Mark. This required moving the top turret and changing the hull. I can't remember any other major changes...

I also wanted to weather it, as most I had seen pictures of, looked beat up. I started with an undercoat of aluminum, then brush painted the camo with thinned out acrylics, allowing the "bare metal" to show through. It was a lot of fun to play with, but it's size made it a handful. Impressive on the shelf for the same reason.

  1. Nicw one Joe, its a mk 1 version by the looks of it. I have goy the Italeri kit to build at some stage. I built the Airfix kit years ago and you are right, the size of ot alone makes it an impressive model.

Nice job on the ol airfix classic! I've got one of these in the stash, and it is a whopper even for 1/72! Very low on detail especially in the cavernous fuselage.

  3. Excellent work Joe. Making something that nice from such an old kit really calls for some modelling skills. Well done!
