Scale Model World Telford 2013

November 11, 2013 · in Show Reports · · 12 · 2.8K

I've attached a fairly random selection from the 50th annversary weekend. With the number of clubs (chapters) and SIGs, taking a (conservative) average of 50 models per group together with the competition area display, I estimate there were upwards of 9000 models on view.

The overseas section included IPMS France, Malta, Israel, Italy, There was a static display of a Spitfire, Huey, and Chieftan British MBT.

There were around 180 traders, ranging from Revell, promoting their new-tool Bf109G6 in 1/32, Zoukei-Mura, promoting their 1/32 Raiden and Uhu (and featuring a prototype of a new 1/32 Horten, with further promotional material on yet another new kit - a 1/32 Do335), Airfix with their 1/24 Typhoon, and an interesting and varied host of 'cottage industry' traders.

The photos are of subjects that simply caught my eye, and are not in any particular order. I took about 200 photos, but found that some had too large a file size to share here. Hopefully, you'll get something of the weekend's buzz from the photos I've attached here.

  1. Thanks for sharing. I see a lot of imagination at work here. I've noticed that yours & the other postings pictures are bright. Was the hall well lit or do you have a good strobe?
I really liked the group of air racers. Do you remember if this was part of a Sig or an individual entry?

    • The air racers were on the IPMS Italy stand. Somebody else also had air racers coming straight out of a large backdrop of the city of Paris. The aircraft were trailing red, white, and blue French national colours; it might have been on a SIG for French aircraft (so many I can't recall). I have a photo of this. If there's enough interest I could post another selection of photos.

There are three huge halls, plus a separate hall for the competition and yet another for 'kit swap', where members pre-register kits which they then bring in for other members/public to buy at good prices (a good way of thinning out the stash!). I think I used an in-fill flash set on auto for a few shots but most were with natural lighting. I did hear someone complain they thought the competition hall should have been brighter (last year they rolled back a large moveable wall but it was left in place this time).

      • Oh don't worry...there's "enough interest" all right. I've already seen some selections that you posted here that I hadn't seen elsewhere already. By all means, post more if you can. And thanks.

  2. What scale is the girl with the towel?

  3. Thanks for sharing the photos Rob. I wouldn't know where to start with all the great work on display. It is a very long and expensive commute for me so thanks for sharing.

  4. These are fantastic, thank you for posting them (and Pt.II). Someday, I'll get to attend...

  5. Thank you for posting these photographs. The display which included the Paris scene was done by our Aerobatic Display Teams SIG who were celebrating their 20th Anniversary.

  6. Just for info, their were over 1300 models in the competition room alone.

    • ...and it seemed one person present for every model in the room - tried to get my camera out of my pocket at one point but was completely hemmed in - hence more of my photos of main halls and fewer contest offerings. But the whole show lived up to the 50th as a special event.
